2.30- sat morning a 78 yr old neighbor down the street shot and killed a 18 yr old kid. the kid was trying to get in his back door. the old guy called the cops they showed up, told the kid to stop but he managed to kick the door in and the home owner shot him twice. turned out it was a kid from two doors down who was drunk and came home to the wrong house.
Damn shame for all involved

Whomever provided the alcohol to the 18 year old is going to be in very, very big trouble.

Very bad deal for all involved. Wish there was a way to convince young people that booze is not cool.

This is a tragic story but sh**t happens.

Drinking alcohol as a minor is something that will never change. I did it and I suspect more than 90% of folks here did it. Had some good times and did some real stupid things. That's life and you learn from it.

....and if someone tried to tell me booze wasn't cool when I was young, I would have laughed in their face. Don't think the attitude has changed much.

Wait, the cops showed up and told the kid to stop, and then the homeowner shot the kid while the cops were there?

No better way to convince young people that anything is cool than the man telling you it isn't.

Just another example of Darwin's Theory in action.

I wonder why the police didn't get physically involved before the kid kicked the door in. It seems like they were negligent in allowing the kid to get that far. I feel bad for the homeowner, being put into a situation where trouble came calling.

Same thing happened in Lubbock, TX a few years ago (except no police involvement before the fact). College student gets drunk and thinks he's breaking into his own house located near campus where a bunch of college kids live. Problem was it wasn't his house and he happened to pick one that wasn't occupied by another college student and the homeowner shot him and killed him. Wonder if it happens a lot?

Not exactly. Not life, that's DEATH and it's too late for that kid to learn anything at all ever again.

Well then I suppose you could try to teach kids that it's more cool going to summer bible school rather than raising hell drinking and partying.

It's just disheartening to know that it inevitably takes a tragedy to learn the lesson.

Tragic, but I don't see how it would have been any different if he'd been 21. Putting the title as "kids and drinking" is a bit misleading, I doubt the guy asked for his ID before he shot him.

This may come as a shock, but there are more than just those two options.

I spent my summers working. When I wasn't working I was wandering around with a fly rod in one hand and a Colt SAA in the other.

Even if those were the only two options .. do you want your kid dead or do you want him alive? In that context Bible school does not seem so bad, y' know ... ?

nope. while i realize some kids are going to go down that path no matter what their parents do. i do think a lot of it can be stopped by the example the parents set.

One thing I noticed in HS was that the foreign exchange students, especially the ones from Europe and S. America were pretty much unfazed by alcohol. I think that they had been exposed to it most of their lives, so there wasn't the "forbidden" stigma attached to it.

Don't know what we as a country could do to fix it, but it does seem that the more something is forbidden, the more teenagers want it.
