Does anyone have case dimensions for;
= 25 Krag A.I.
= 25 Krag standard, or short
= 25-303 British

I have 25 caliber 1:10 twist barrel, chambered for a .54" rimmed case, about .46" base, 1.5" to shoulder, and about 2.2" over all. I'm trying to determine how "custom" this barrel is.

What's the shoulder diameter?

The .25 Krag AI has a .545" rim, .060 thick, .457 base, 1.805 to the shoulder, 2.300 to the mouth, 35 degree shoulder angle, .441 shoulder diameter.

The .25-303 British is merely the .303 Brit necked down with no other changes.
So you have a .540 rim, .063 thick rim, .455 base, 1.75 to shoulder, .412 shoulder diameter, 2.185 to mouth.

The AI can be shorter.

Shoulder diameter will say much, re: blown out case.

The Krag also has a .540" rim.

I'm thinking he needs a chamber cast, mucho quick, and go from there.

Yes, I need to do a chamber cast (never done one), this one definitely requires better measurements. Are either of you shooting these rounds?

I'm not shooting either one but both the .25 Krag AI and the .25-303 have loads for them listed on loaddata.

They are also both listed in The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions.

I read somewhere that the .25 Krag should never be built
a Krag action.

I'd say that's good advice... The standard .25 Krag, is almost exactly equal to the .257 Robts... The .25 Krag Imp. 40*; nearly equates to a .25/06.... I'd not want anything to do with those kind of pressures in Krag action... Now on Win. Hi-Wall.... Well... That's another story...

I've been meaning to build one for some time, but I can't make up my mind which. Trouble is, I have both .25 Krag and .25 Krag Imp dies, but I think I really want a 6.5 Krag... :blsuh: I'll get it worked out eventually...

Why can't you build a 25 Krag on a Krag action if you keep the pressure the same as a 30/40?

You can of course.

You can, of course, but how are you going to determine the pressure? I would think it might be REAL easy to overload it... And with only one lug in the action, (And an action that's 100 yrs old and known that brittle actions exist...) I'm betting you'd only do it ONCE! And you may not live to regret it. Much better to play it safe and do it on an appropriate action... In my opinion, you have little to gain and a lot to lose by doing it on the Krag action...

I passed up a custom Krag in .25-35 several years ago, Im
sure that cartridge is no problem for the action.

I've got the 25AKI in a Siamese. PTG makes a reamer matching the dies that RCBS produces. I do not remember the specs, and the print is in the old retired computer.

4DCH made my dies from the PTG print for about half the price of RCBS. According to Dave at 4D, there are numerous versions of the of the 25AKI floating around, each varing in its only little way.

I'm sure that PTG would email you a print for the cost of a phone call. That would at least give you something to judge your chamber cast against.

I have just joined this group after finding it in a google search for .25/.303 dimensions. Thanks to previous posters who gave the OAL at 2.185", this concurs with Ackley's 1962 Manual. I have a .25/.303 and have just measured a couple of cases full sized in a Simplex die. I get around 1.77" to the shoulder, which suggests that your 1.5' is possibly for the .25 Short Krag. Dimensions are fairly similar for .303 Brit and .30/40 Krag, and over here in NZ a number of Enfields have been rebarrelled to .30/40 with no fuss. My .25/.303 has shot 4 Red Deer, and I have never retrieved a Hornady 100gr projectile, as they have all gone through both shoulders and the heart/lung area. Either round would make a good US Deer rifle, just keep the pressures conservative.
