I own and run a 2004 2500HD with a 6.0. I get 10-12 mpg in the summer and 8-10 in the winter.
Ride is fine

Easier to extend the trailer length 4 to 5 feet than move the axels! I have done this before and it is a sure fix, however I did the work myself, saving on labor and steel was purchased at a 20% discount. The other option is to restack your payload somehow. move the heavier ATV to the rear etc.

It's hard to suggest anything without pictures. It might also be possible to add a 3d axle in front of the other two. Even a light, 2000lb axle would be more than enough although you'd want the same hub bolt pattern so the spare tire would fit all of them.

One thing to note, the manual for my truck says not to exceed the rear GAWR before the spring bars on the WD hitch are hooked up. Most folks weigh after. I think the numbers must be ok both ways.

That's not what I've seen. The Fords don't have a solid front axle, for one. I'd start with that first. E 1 ton Fords do, the 3/4 tons don't though. Just to clarify, both 3/4 and 1 ton Fords have solid front axles.

Just to clarify, both 3/4 and 1 ton Fords have solid front axles. That is correct, as do the 3/4 and 1 ton Dodge Rams.
