I am going to Cabela's tomorrow and may purchase a youth recurve for my 9 yr old son. He is going as well. Cabelas sell the PSE youth recurve for $79. Not bad...any other suggestion. My son may not get into or he may go crazy. I have not problem getting him something different in a couple years if he decides to stick with it....look for some insight. I am a novice shooter myself.

Look into the Genesis bow. It has wheels like a compound but does not increase in draw weight as you go back like a recurve. It's also does not have a peak weight or let-off like a compound.

It's a very good teaching/learning/beginner bow for youths. It's adjustable from 10-20 lbs and allows you to install sights and a rest on it as well.

I bought a Browning Micro compound out of the newspaper for $45.00 with arrows, quiver, and release.

It adjusted up to 27 lbs with 30% letoff, and 2 different draw lengths.

Golden Eagle used to sell a youth model called the Brave. My soon to be 6 yr old son was given one. The draw length is long for him and the weight a little tough at the lowest but he shoots it well. I think he shoots his longbow better but the compound is new to him so it gets the nod for now. I think it would work well for a 9 yr old. IIRC they aren't really expensive and would be a good learning tool. There is always a market for used youth bows. If he takes to it, then in a year or two go to a better set-up that can be used to hunt with. Just my opinion.
