Getting a Stand- an account of the buffler hunters on the plains. quite entertaining-they were tough also.

another really good book is Plenty Coups, the biography of a crow indian. he explains his childhood and how the tribe and people in it lived. and fought.

You need to read Terry C. Johnston's "Dance on the Wind" series with the main character being Titus Bass. Good historical fiction on that era.

"Give Your Heart To The Hawks" got me started. Now I have 20+ books on the subject. I read 'em, then reread 'em in a year or two.

We took our kids to Bent's fort and bought the book there. It was great, but my kids are in their 40's now.

Read some of Teddy Roosevelt's escapades. While not truly a mountain main, he was still a "tough guy".

You might try "Across the Wide Missouri" by Bernard DeVoto.

While "Across the Wide Missouri" doesn't have the ficticious excitement of "Crow Killer" or "Medicine Calf"(the almost laughable exploits of Jim Beckworth)it does give plenty of indepth information on the fur trade, players involved, and expansion West during the 1830's.

I picked up an ancient copy of this book many years ago
at a rummage sale when we lived in Dayton, Ohio.
Parts of it were a bit tedious to read with map coordinates, descriptions of the lay of the land, etc., but it does have some interesting accounts of Indian tribes, frontiersmen and mountain men of that era. It even mentions some on the Hugh Glass story. When I read it I skipped over the more tedious parts.

You can read it online for free here: http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=moa;idno=ABA1776.0001.001

"Give Your Heart to The Hawks written by Winfred Blevins, published by Avon Books. This book was the inspiration for the movie The Mountain Men starring Charleton Heston and Brian Keith, distributed by Columbia Pictures."

Very good introduction. About half general background of the era, the other half about specific people/places.
