DMc,
Yes it is a custom. The oral histroy behind -- no paper trail unfortunately -- is that workers at the Ruger plant scavaenged the metal parts and customized wood for this 'lunch bucket" custom rifle. (I have no idea if Ol' Bill authorized the project or not.) Ruger records say that the receiver Serial # was for a .22 Hornet #3.
I like it so much that I had 6.5x55 built on a #3 action and using the same pattern before Ruger came out with their Swede.

Like GH. I enjoy building #1s that Ruger should have built but never will. Many of my choices run toward more modern cartridges.
My custom Rugers include -- a 6.8 SPC II carbine, a 7mm BR and a 6.5 Swede based on #3s; a .41 mag 1V Type carbine; a .338-06 and a .338 Federal in B profiles, a 45-70 with tiger maple stock, a.35 Whelen wood and blue 1S and a 9.3x62 1B in tiger maple wood.
I have one last donor -- a 7mm RM B -- and a custom stock set ready for the next project #1 that i "need". So far, the inspiration and finances lag behind the parts acquisition.

Did Ruger ever catalog or did Lipsey's ever make a run of K1A's in .30-06?

MPO is that Ruger can build whatever they decide to build. What profile/barrel length existed prior to the AH that became the AH?
There is no accounting for taste.
Experience is a great thing as long as one survives it.
Generally, there ain't a lot that separates the two however, Barely making it is a whole lot more satisfying than barely not making it.

Given your reason to dismiss an AH in 280 Rem, how did you come up with this one? Not the standard AH contour with a muzzle diameter of .560? .1185 does seem a little thin. Sir: My comments on the .280 were referencing using a 24" tube. (Same contour as the .25/06) My 8x57 is a factory 7x57 barrel, with sights removed, and rebored to 8x57. Barrel length is 22". My .338 Fed , is a rebored .243 Win. (Also a 1-A, .22" bbl.) I wanted a .358 Win., but the 'smith refused to do it, because he said the barrel was to thin for him to bore to .35 cal. (Don't ask me how RUGER did it with the .35 Whelen.... Perhaps it's because they are hammer-forged...) GH

It depends on how you react to getting a custom rifle built. If you want to send out your b/a and have it back in two weeks, then I can't recommend anyone. One has to understand how a custom 'smith works. Most of them work for about $10/hour or less. If you sit down and think about it, Every time a reborer changes calibers, he has machinery set-up time. That's time that he does NOT get paid for. Thus most of them like to do them in blocks. IWO, they don't change the set up for every single barrel job. So, if you want, say... an 7x57 bored to 8x57. One must understand that the 'smith likely doesn't get a lot of requests for an 8mm job. So it's likely to take much longer that say, a .35 or a .338... The 'smith I use, takes usually 1-2 years to do a rebore job. Part of that is my own fault because I often want something odd or different. The fastest job I've ever had done, was about 6-8 mos. I don't bug him. I go up there about once a year, and take him a couple of jobs, and pick up whatever he has done. Sometimes it's two or three, sometimes none... He has two of mine up there right now... I have another two to go up there when I get a round tu-it. Probably sometime this fall... I have a Lo-Wall in .22 Hornet to be rebored to either .25/20 or .32/20 (Have not really decided which, yet... And a M-660 Rem in .308 to be bored to .358 Win. (this one will be a 1~14 twist) (I have 3 other .358's in 1~12" and two in 1~16") So for research purposes, I'm going to try something different... There is Danny Pedersen in AZ, Orygun gunsmithing in Oregon, The guy in Wash state that bought out Cliff LaBounty, and I think one in midwest named Jesse something-or-other. A bit of research should net you their names and address' If you are in a hurry, one of them should be able to do it in less than a year... Good Luck! GH

I have ... a RMEF Commerative in .338 Win Mag. I lusted over one of those. It shows up on Gunbroker periodically. And it usually pops up when I don't have any money! Edited:Ooops, nevermind. Its an NRA special edition that I had it confused with.

No but they came close with the 35 Whelen. 30-ought Yeah, I didn't think I remembered seeing a K1A in .30-06...that is one I would love to have. I actually had one of the laminate K1B a while back. For a .30-06, it was a pig. I ended up trading it for an Abolt in .338 Winchester, It ended up going down the road as well. I really wish I had just kept the K1B. I keep thinking about one of the K1A's in 35 Whelen but for some reason it just hasn't warmed me over yet. However, I bet there is nothing as handy or light feeling as a 1A with a .35 cal hole down the barrel.

I think Ruger made a K1AH and a KIAB with a 24 inch barrel and a wood stock and I know they made a 25-06 in a 1B in SS/laminate too cuz I have one.
Are the last five on your list actually K1As? Those bigger bores are usually 1Ss, 1Hs etc. 1B

Sir: I"m sure you don't realize that you're asking for the impossible... (If you don't believe me, try calling Ruger and asking them...) (I have called them a number of times, BTW) Ruger #1's are only made in 4 barrel weights... A,B,C, and D. "A" weight barrels are all 22" (With the only exception of the #1-AB in .25-06 that had a 24" bbl.) (This was a limited run.) "B" Weight barrels have always been produced in 26" lengths with the exception of a few larger calibers which have 22" lengths... Thus if you are asking for a 26" bbl with sights, then you are asking for a #1-S. (The 1-B's all had 26" bbls without sights, but are no longer cataloged...) I do hope you understand what I'm trying to tell you... GH

Dear GH, I do believe you are mistaken. Ruger made a 26" 218 Bee with sights & AH fore arm. David
