If you were asked what is the best bullet for a new guy to start out with casting in the .30 cal's what would you say? Understanding they don't have a clue about 2 groove or 6 groove or 12 groove. I'm curious, I know what I've said.

The Lyman 311041. Flat nosed, gas checked, good weight, good engraving area, easy to cast and easy to get.

Bumble,
Listen to Rolly, I have used a number of 30 cal molds, over the years. The first was the 31141 Lyman. After 40 years, when I wanted a new 2 holer mold I bought the new 311041,which is the same as the other except that it drops a smaller diameter bullet.
It's the most accurate bullet in either of my '06 rifles and my Krag. It is also a good hunting bullet.
I had a custom mold made for a paper patched bullet, with smoothe sides, with the same profile as the 311041. It got me a one shot kill, the only buck that I saw.
good luck,
Frank

Well I asked to find out what others think. I haven't used that one yet. I would say the 311291. It's been one of the more user friendly designs that I've used. The Loverins' shoot nice but can be a pain for getting well filled bullets that still drop nice . I just had a new two groove barrel put on a 03-a3 I have that was sorely in need of a new tube. I'm curious to see how my 311335 does in that. The other two -06's I've run it through were 4 groove barrels and they didn't really shine with it. After I work out with the 2 groove I still have to get going on a .32 Special I bought last month. It's great to be so busy.

Sir
I cant help much here but John Haviland shoots cast bullets in everything he owns. I sent him a rifle yesterday(223 Remington I built )and he is going to shoot cast in this. You may want to read about some of his work.
Charlie Sisk

Mr Sisk- I read the articles of his that come out in Handloader with much interest. I think he makes alot of sense. It would make for a good article if he spoke of his favorites.
