I'm a big 260 fan but wouldn't mind a little more ability to seat bullets out. I've been looking at shorter options like the creedmoor and the 6.5x47 Lapua. Is anyone running a Lapua with a 22-24" barrel? If so what kind of speeds can you get with 140's? Most of the info I've seen has been with longer barrels.

I'm thinking of a Mid weight tactical style build. Might try something mag fed.

I had one built on a Remington model 7, so i was also concerned about utilizing bullet depth, and I can reach the lands. I am amazed at how gentle it is to shoot, and how it shoots almost everything well. Mine really loves 130 Bergers at 2900+ fps and shoots 1/2 all day with this load.

I have built alot of them. Most of them have all been 26" tactical style builds. 130's at 3000fps, 140's at 2875 range. Has alot of good things going for it.

Ive never been able to justify a new rifle for the 100 fps difference between 6.5x55 and 6.5x47, and I love 6.5s

I have two.

My first is my HEAVY tactical/sniper rig.

Surgeon action
Krieger, MTU, 26" SS, 1:8.5
AICS 1.5 stock
Shilen 2.5 lb trigger
TPS alum rings
NF 5.5-22x50 w/ NP-R1 reticle
130 Berger VLD, 40.8 H4350, CCI 450
Runs 2850 (now about 2820) and shoots mostly .5 MOA out to 1000 yds

It's even heavier with the 6"-9" Harris bipod attached.

My light, hunting, rig is as follows.

Pierce SA
Broughton 26", SS, 5c, 1:8
PTG BDL bottom metal with Rem follower, spring, mag box.
McMillan Remington Sporter, Edge filled
Pierce alum 20 MOA base
Farrell 30mm alum rings
Rifle Basix 2.5 lb
NF 2.5-10x32mm with NP-R2 reticle
140 Berger VLD, 42.1 gr Rel 17, Fed 205M
Runs 2960 fps
140 Part, 41.6 gr, Rel 17, Fed 205M
Runs 2869 fps
Both about .5 to .75 MOA groups out to 600 yds, the furthest I've shot it on paper.

Not an ultra light but not a beast either.

The -47 case is an absolute joy to load. Other than initial trimming to even things up, I've yet to need to trim a case in 8+ loadings. I do anneal about every 4th shot. The Surgeon's throat has grown some .080" in wear with 1100 rounds and yet just hitting 2.8" OAL; still room to grow in the AICS mag. The 130's bearing surface/boattail junction is now 3/4 the way down the neck. Shot a 5", 1000 yd, 5-shot group earlier this month.

Same gunsmith, Chris Matthews of http://longshotriflesllc.com/. Same reamer which means the same Redding Type-S FL bushing die with a .289" bushing giving me .001" neck tension. KISS

6.5-47 all the way!

Pat,

Thanks! Chris is a very good and unique 'smith. I've learned that if I gather ALL the components he will build a rifle in days and not months.

6.5x47 Lapua....most accurate cartridge/rifle combo I've shot in over 60 years of shooting! Using Sierra 123 gr. HPBT and 38.5 grs. Varget I have fired several 5 shot groups from 1300 yds. that I could cover with a standard playing card! 1000 yds?? NO CONTEST!! This is a Jon Beanland build w/24" 1-8.5 Krieger tube.

Sharpsman,

That same combo (123 MK and Varget) was my runner up load. The 130 VLD and H4350 load I use just beat it out when I ran some 1000 yd .2 gr ladders such as Jason Baney advises.

gssp, we must know each other? JB is a good friend! did you ever try the 140 Berger with @1gr less H4350?
you should! 140's are way better than the 130 Berger in my tactical above @2850fps

talk about a 1k deer rifle! geeze! i smacked a speedgoat in Wyoming at 855yds and drew again this year smile

I did try H4350 and the 140 VLD in my 26" "little" Pierce. Stopped at 40.5 gr when I "should" have been reaching max. Only got to around 2700 fps. Decided to not pursue H4350 further when I can push the 140 to 2900+ with Rel 17. What did you push up to with the 140/H4350 combo?

i just spent 1/2hr tearing apart my newly organized basement!
Grrr...!
it sure looks nice but i cant find a damn thing!

guessing? i have a fast bbl and can get 2900W140 but need to find the paper to answer accurately.I use (40.3/2850)I wanted to try rl-17 and am pretty certain i could have gained more speed but i thoroughly enjoying where I am at and felt that it wasn't worth it.the last speedgoat fell at 855yds and it will be with me in Wyoming at the end of September to hit that prarie dog that i threw the first round (and only one) an inch over his head at 900.I passed on the 925 goat and it was teasing me in the scope and just had to try smile
i'll try to find my papers.

i did another basement sweep and the only thing i can conclude is i either put my 6.5x47 data in a really safe place ot tossed it so i wouldn't change anything?

i am currently using 40.3 for the 140 @2850fps without any primer pocket issues at all.I remember hitting 2900fps with pressure and backed it down,i dont think the brass would have held up very long at 2900.
