I made a deal with a guy today and am buying his 454.I see on Freedom Arms site they say not to shoot 45 long Colt in their revolvers. They also say to reload the brass with 454 Dies. Here is the question,Midway has dies that say for 454 or 45 Colt.I can not use these dies?????? The only difference in the cartridge seems to be the rim is thicker on the 45 Colt cartridges.Anyone have any insight into this?????Thanks ahead ,Huntz

you can load both with the 454 dies and you can shoot 45 colt in the 454 pistol just clean the cylinder before going back to the 454 or the build up may cause a spike in pressure.

The tolerances on Freedom Arms guns are way tighter and many 45 Colt rounds won't fit. If they do fit and leave even a small residue it makes it tougher to load 454 rounds. They will make you a cylinder for 45 Colt loads. This has not so much to do with Freedom Arms as the Sammi specs for the different rounds.

If the die manufacturer specifically states "for .45Colt and/or .454C", you should be OK. Earlier .45 Colt dies were optimized for .454" dia bullets and don't provide proper case neck tension for the .454C (I'm pretty sure this is the reason for Freedom Arms recommendation) . The 454 Casull mostly uses .451/.452" diam bullets.
In the mid 1980s I used a set of RCBS .45 ACP dies to load my .454C. Later, I bought the Lee .45/.454 die set. When the price for the RCBS .454 dies became reasonable, it bought a set. All worked fine loading the .454C. Those dies now load .45 ACP, .45 Colt and .454C. Each is set up in a dedicated tool head for my Dillon 550B.
