What's the remainder of the barrel measure in at for length? And are there any letters or numbers stamped on the front of the receiver by the barrel, normally they'd be covered up by the forearm.

Here's the picture of the serial #. It's either 116484 or 115484. I'll double check for any other lettering on the barrel or throughout the gun. Thanks for the help.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it was originally an 1899A. The gun was originally a straight stock, non tapering barrel and the barrel looks a good 20" long still but is clearly cut... possibly a later 99A or 99C but unlikely. I'm sticking with 1899A. Plus the serial looks like it starts with 11... so it pretty much has to be an 1899A...

damn, you posted while I was posting.. there won't be any letter designations anywhere on this early of a gun... it was an 1899A

I disagree Norm, I think the lever is original... just modified.

Yep, probably an 1899A, possibly an 1899A SR (Short Rifle). Should date to 1911. Originally probably looked like this one of LBK's, except with a perchbelly on the stock:

So, what parts of this gun are not original. And what parts could I replace to help it get back to what it originally was? Please help me out. Thanks

you would need to start by finding a new lever and then a new butt sotck... then a rifle style (crescent) butt plate. If you really wanted it to be original, you would need to find a replacement 26" barrel. I think that is more work than its worth but its up to you. If it shoots okay, I would not worry about the barrel at least. If you are handy and can do the stock your self, several places sell semi inletted stocks. The lever and butt plate can be found on ebay if you have patience and $$.

Boses of Nebraska might be able to hook you up with an appropriate stock, I believe they have templates for the early 1899 crescent style they can duplicate from. Might need some final fitting. Don't know if they can help you with a buttplate or not. Can sometimes find levers for sale on the auction sites as folks part out trashed Savages.

*Sorry, posted up on this old thread by mistake... As for your questions, the barrel I have is 21" to receiver, 22" OAL, has been set back about 1/2" and rechambered to 303 from something else or simply set back and rechambered. Bore is good. It is stamped 303 but not by Savage and the original caliber (may have been 303 also) is not visible. Has a fore end stud and no sights (as I'd rob them before sending). Looks like an old reblue in good shape, most lettering visible. The barrel would be free if you'd like to pay to get it unscrewed and set to you if it will help you.
