I was just wondering what's everyones favorite .22 ammo for squirrel hunting? I've been using winchester wildcat ammo in my Savage MK. 2 with good results. Whats everyone else using?

My favorite has been discontinued, the Eley White Rabbit high velocity hollowpoint. The Eley SubSonic is very good also. Winchester PowerPoints and CCI Small Game Bullets have killed a lot of squirrels for me too over the years. Right now my most used little squirrel rifle is sighted with the Winchester SubSonic hollowpoint. Basically if headshooting the most accurate for your gun (whatever that load is) gets 'er done. If you will occasionally shoot 'em in the chest then I like a hollowpoint of some type.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

+1 for Winchester sub-sonic hollowpoints. Very accurate, and very effective on squirrels.

anyone try the CCI sub-sonic hollowpoints? They're the only subsonics I can find on retailers shelfs.

On a whim a couple of years ago, I tried some Remington subsonics a friend gave me. 38 grain, round nose hollow point. They are very accurate in my Ruger 77/22 and do all my squirrel and rabbit hunting with them now.

roundoak, I have a LH Remington 581 that loves Remington sub sonics. Made a 112 yard shot on a prairie dog with it, my longest with a 22RF.

Good shooting, there Steve. Normally I have not had Remington 22RF bullets shoot well for me in any of my rifles over the years, but was pleasantly surprised with the subsonics.
Glad to know others have success with the subsonics.

leomort,
If your rifle likes them, the Remingtons will work very well.
Have probably killed more squirrels with them than any other ammo.
I suggest you buy a box and give them a try.

Steve,
From what I remember, my CZ 452 shoot the remington subsonics very well. What a diffence in noise between the remington subsonics and CCI mini-mags!

Been shooting Aguila 30 grain HP's
They're doing over 1700 FPS, and really sling goo from small kritters!
Most distrutive 22LR I've ever used...(GRIN!)

I eat any squirrel that I shoot - use an ancient Savage .410/.22 rifle. Number 6 shot in a .410 is perfect for the bushy tails. I NEVER fire a solid bullet into the air. Here in Pennsylvania we have a lot of wilderness, but more people, suburbs, houses, and the like. There is no reason to make someone angry, or to get more media anti-hunter ranting due to random bullets falling from the sky.

Bluesman: Ever any issues with finding all the shot (as far as food prep goes? I'd hate to crack a tooth on the stuff. I've only ever used a .22, but I was thinking of getting my boy a .410 for squirrels.

I don't shoot squirrels in trees unless there is a solid background like a tree trunk. Leaves do not qualify.
I do this for all the same reasons that bluesman uses a shotgun.
If I'm not sure, I don't shoot. I've found that I never make a mistake if I don't shoot. And I enjoy hunting way too much to screw it up.

I had a winchester 74 22 short rifle , when I moved to PA I coulden't use it because it is a semi auto it was an outstandingly accurate rifle. I havent found any manual 22 that would shoot shorts as good as I want to. but 22 shorts are my favorite ammo. during WWII that was all I could afford to buy 0.15 a box.
