Got back on wednesday and finally got done working on meat and hide today. A lot of work but well worth it.

Love these family hunt pics.

What headstamp was your brother using in that Savage M99?

The savage is chambered in 300 savage. I am not sure on the scope. We were trying to figure out what kind of a scope it is. My dad got the rifle from his uncle when he was a teenager. If anybody can tell what kind of scope it is from the pictures would love to hear. It is a 4 power with a post and line reticle.
The bear was 8.5 feet and a 25 inch skull. It is not a monster but a nice mature bear. We were checking on several moose kill sites that we knew of. We were drifting down a little slough onto a kill. He stood up on his hind legs to check the wind for a couple seconds then dropped back down out of sight in the tall grass. He popped up again to check the wind. All we could see was from the chest up. My brother shot for the center of the chest and my other brother and i shot about a tenth of a second later also to the chest. He dropped like a rock out of sight. We gave him a few minutes and went in carefully expecting to find him where he fell. We got a bit nervous when he wasnt there. It took us about twenty nervous minutes to find him. He only went about 25 yards but was in very tall grass and thick alders. That along with almost no daylight left made him difficult to find. We finally got back to camp by spotlight at about 230 am and in bed about 4. Then up at 730 to take down camp load upmthe boats and catch the tide to go home.

A wild guess here on the scope is that it is an early model Leupold. I've one about the same color, shape, and size, at any rate.

Gotta love that Savage lever gun.

Thanks guys. The bear pictures didn't turn out that great with the lack of light, rain, & bugs. They really don't do the bear justice. He was beautiful chocolate with a little blond right along the back and top of the head, with no rubs to speak of. My brother is wanting to have someplace in Anchorage do the skull for him. (ie beatles) Anybody have any recommendations for that?

I used http://www.dandcexpediters.com/ a few years back on Rick Grant's recommendation. They didn't use beatles but got the skull very clean and white. You might check with Rick and see if that's still who he recommends.

skudrunner,

If he doesn't mind shipping the skull, I had Skulls Unlimited do a javelina skull a few years ago, and they did a great job.
