I have a friend that I custom reload for that has a wheatherby 300 wsm and he wants to shoot or try to shoot up or over 1000 yards; does anyone have any ideas of where to start. I only load for the average hunter and average ranges on the custom side to get the best powder and bullet combo but I know that should apply to this also.

I'm no 1,000-yard shooter, but I'd say start with the right bullet, one with a .600 BC or better.

Read the stickies by Tresmon,at the beginning of the reloading forum, then pick out a 175 or 190 grain SMK or Berger bullet and buy some H4831,H4831SC,or RL-22.Attention to detail pays off at long range. Lightman

It is nice to see a custom reloader take the time to ask questions about bullets and powder for the stuff he loads. I bet your stuff is super good!

I use a 165 gr Sierra KG HPBT in mine up to 750 yards, but after that I go up in power to my 300 Ultra Mag or .30/378 Wby both using the Nosler 200 gr Accubond. Before either of these were mainstream cartridges, I used a 180 gr Hornady in one of my .300 Wbys. In order to shoot game at those distances you will need to do quite a bit of practice and be very peculiar with your shots. Very few places afford enough room for those types of shots. I my uncle spent many hours with me starting when I was about 10 until I was in college teaching me how to shoot distance targets. I learned many good techniques from him.

From 40 years experience, I can tell you to weight sort all your brass, bullets, weigh all of your powder charges. True up your case necks, flash holes, primer pockets. When I shoot that far I use once fired cases neck sized within .005" of the shoulder, so they are tight in the chamber. I seat my bullets .0005" off the lands, I check each one for function to see that all chamber. I check all loaded rounds for run out.

I can tell you that it is very gratifying to take down an animal at a 1000 yards, but most of mine I shoot at that distance are hogs. Even if a hog runs off for a couple of hundred yards after being shot, that is no big deal. A wounded deer or an elk can cover a lot more distance than that. That brings up the ethical question are you really good to shoot game that far? If you can honestly answer yes, then by all means do so. If you are shooting targets or wrecked cars, send them down range!
Good shooting,
Marcus.

Ignore boxer. He's a guy who's been banned multiple times but has come back just to piss people off for his own amusement.

Reloder71, is this target shooting I hope? If so, give the 208-gn Amax a whirl. .648 BC doesn't hardly suck.

For powder I'd start with RL17 and 22 and see what they showed me. H4350 was great with 200's in my very similar .325...

The CENTER will hold.

His insults to everyone here will get him there pretty quick again. He must like the sensation......of that rope around his neck.

Yea, after about 40 years I have shot most of the 30 caliber bullets that are out there. In that time I came to the conclusion, if it works use it.

About 15 years ago on the Impala SS web site, which I belong to we had a guy that drove a silver "fake" SS that claimed it was a special one off that was painted silver from the factory. He named his car "Big Sexy". Boxer, might you be that same person reincarnated on the 24 Hr Campfire?

Just so this post has enough gun content. I am very fond of my left handed laminated stock stainless steel 8mm Remington Magnum with a 27.5 inch Lilja barrel equipped with a Vais muzzle brake, which I also shoot long distances with 220 gr spitzer boat tails. I just had to add that!
Good shooting,
Marcus.

Never lost a bet large enough to slum an Impala. 8mm,27.5" spout and a brake with 220's...you've an incredibly funny sense of humor!
