Hi,
I'm thinking of a 257 Roy barrel for my little Blaser K95.
The main reason for this is curiosity, I have absolutely no experience with any cartridge that has the potential to send hunting bullets at +3300 fps and I'm curious about what that combination migt do to our big game.
I live in Sweden where the main big game are deer, boars and moose. I do have the opportunity to do some mountain hunting as well and that's the main reason that I'm looking at the 257 Roy as the shooting distances tend to be longer in the mountains.
I've read a lot of the treads regarding 257 Roy but I'd like to hear your opinion about what bullets you favour and why you favour them. At he moment I'm considering the 100 grains TTSX, 110 grains Accubond and the 115 grain Berger VLD.
What kind of game do you hunt? What are your observations from the field?
I'm sorry for all the questions but the 257 Roy is more or less unknown in Europe...

Best regards,
Henrik

I tend to think of the 257 Weatherby as an especially fine 300+ yard midsize game (deer and boar) firearm. If one is hunting wide open heath then it might apply. With moose especially, I'd go with heavier slugs than one typically sees in the 257. Yes, a moose will fall to a well placed 257 slug, but I'd not be inclined to try any bone crushing shots on those boys.

Close in, one can see some explosive results on game with the 257. One does not typically eat to the bullet hole.

Whenever I hunt moose or boars with my K95 I'll primarily be using the 8x57 barrel which is much better suited to these animals in my opinion.

The main game animals that I intend to hunt with the 257 (if I get one) would be deer and sheep/chamois and such.

Henrik, I have at least four customers running either K95s or R93 blasers in .257 Wby and they love it.

One of them shot five shots touching with his K95 .257. It was amazing.

I know another fellow who just poleaxed a caribou with his Blaser in .257.

Nice choice for what you are doing...plus it has the unique factor too

PS...my next Blaser will be a K95 in 6.5x55

I think the .257 would be great choice in the K-95. The only downside maybe the noise. Might want to look at the .270 as an alternative.

I love my luxus K95 in .308

That sounds great, do you recall what loads your customers where using?
It's nice to hear that the K95 model shot that good as some of the guys that I talked to regarding the Roy are advocating using a reamer with less freebore then the original wheatherby spec in order to get the best accuracy.

P.S. I already have a 6.5x55 barrel for my K95 wink

I can't comment on the .257 Roy but I have a K95 in 270 Win. and it is extremely accurate and 300 yards is a piece of cake for it. And it will get a 130 grain TSX dawn range pretty darn fast. I know the Roy would certainly have the unique factor, but so would the price of the ammo for it. Henrik, I am jealous, 6.5x55 in a Blaser K95 has got to be the PERFECT rifle. Sorry, I know you were asking about the 257 Roy in particular, please forgive my rambling.

Friend has a 95 .257 along with several other barrels including the .22 Rimfire...it has become his favorite "bolt" gun...
