Not your typical request, I realize all loads are to be used with caution at my risk. 300 Saum 225 Hornady match bullet Trail Boss. Desired speed 1050 +/- There is a Trail Boss load published for 300 WSM at 1490 fps with a 150 grain bullet, It seems I can get down to 1050 using a heavier bullet. http://www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Trail-Boss-data.pdfThanks in advance.

There is no 225g .308 Hornady match bullet in my version of QuickLOAD (v3.6). You'd need to mic detailed measurements of it (length, shank diameter, diameter of boat-tail, length of boat-tail). Also, you don't specify the barrel length or the COAL. If I use the 240g Sierra MatchKing #9245, 24" barrel, case length of 2.003", COAL of 2.825" it gives the results below. USE THIS DATA AT YOUR OWN RISK.Cartridge : .300 Rem SA Ultra Mag
Bullet : .308, 240, Sierra HPBT LR MatchK 9245

Powder : IMR TrailBoss

Have you e-mailed Hodgdon and asked for a load with that combo?

I have not emailed yet but a good suggestion. The Max COAL listed for the 300 saum is 2.825 so I would use that as my magic number as this is a long and sexy bullet. The bullet measures 1.580 in length by itself, boattail is 0.255 with a length of roughly 0.185, Bearing surface (shank?) would be 0.645. I think the Rem M7 mag is a 22 inch barrel but that is relying on a faulty memory. It may not work due to the twist I am working with but I am deciding if I want to use this platform for suppressor use. I know, easier to use a 308 but I don't have one (yet)...

Shank diameter would be the nominal bullet diameter. Most likely .308. Although, on occasion you will find a .308 bullet that mic's .3075 or .3085, etc.
If I can remember, I'll try and run those numbers tonight although I do think the data for the 240g MK will get you close...
I'm not familiar enough with TrailBoss to know if too light of a charge is dangerous (besides the risk of a squib), but you could start at 9.5g and test up to 11.0g and see what you get...

It looks like QuickLOAD predicts about 10.7g of TrailBoss to get you what you want. I've had QuickLOAD be spot-on before, but I've also had it be 50-70 fps off as well. Considering some of the starting loads for TrailBoss run in the 14k PSI range, I'd think that the predicted 17k PSI at 10.6g should be safe without risk of squibbing. Good luck.

Just noticing this thread. The IMR load data for Trail Boss reduced loads in rifles wants you to start with 70% case fill. I don't know if that is because they are worried about position sensitivity or pressure variation with it? You might call them and ask. A 70% fill in QL goes a little faster than you want. Not subsonic.

Member William Iorg, who's having a technical problem posting, passes this along: "Nick,
For some reason I cannot access the 24 Hour campfire. I was going to post on the thread about the sub sonic loads for the 300 SAUM. In my experience it is not a good idea to load Trail Boss below the 70% level. Odd little things begin to happen - significant velocity extreme spreads for one. This is not as eye catching as when Trail Boss is compressed. Compressing Trail Boss raises pressure alarmingly - right now. I was hoping Trail Boss would fill the void for use as bulk powder but this is not the case.
Greg Mushial has data on his GMDR site for the 300 RUM and the 300 WSM (two very different cartridges, I agree) using fast pistol powders. The data is reliable and only requires an adjustment to your thinking about the manner in which you charge your cases. You cannot afford a double charge.
The difference in case capacity between the SAUM and the WSM is about 7.0 grains which is not a great deal when we are looking at charges of 7.0 to 11.0 grains of Accurate Arms No. 2 or 6.0 to 10.0 grains of Alliant Bullseye pushing a 170-grain cast bullet."

Crewed get a 308 man. This may not be a good idea, reduced loads are cool, but this is a bit much, IMO.
