Hold on, it was MY suggestion - I think I even have a bag of fresh WW 7/08 brass for him to get started! Besides, it's alot easier for him to send things within the border  Too bad, I said it first. 
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Rick - You're tough! Sisk, agreed, 7/08 ain't got the same soul, but it's got a short action...but it's still a 1/2 a Millimeter than the 6.5s! I guess I got hooked on the 55 on a 6.5, and like it's short action twins. Have no doubt, if I were given a Paul Jaeger or other fine '98 or 33/40 in 275 Rigby, I'd be a happy man and use it generously! Anyone? TC1?

Undoubtedly, you will soon remedy that oversight. Bullets only "know" pressure/force, friction, mass, and time as they accelerate down the barrel. They cannot read case head information. At equal pressures, with equal bullets, there is very little difference between 7mm08 and 7x57, with 7x57 having a tiny advantage. With heavy for caliber bullets, the 7x57 does seem to have a bit more advantage. To most people, the 270 seems to be a necked down 30-06. To me, the 270 seems to be a stretched 7x57, compromised by being slimmed down a little. I couldn't agree more. The .270 just aint a 7x57. Just a skinny wanabe. reflex264

We have some early loading manuals that give "Ruger only loads" in the 7x57. In this day of litagation that would never fly. I won't post the loads but since we happen to have some Ruger 7x57s around here I can tell you that it is no problem to get 139s out at 2900 with no pressure signs. That was published data once upon a time. reflex264 Mine does that easily with H4350

In an instrumented 7x57, 48.5 grains H4250, 51 grains of RL19, or 52.5 grains of RL22 all give me right around 2730-2760 FPS with a 160/162 grain bullet at measured pressures right around the55 KPSI region.
That's a pretty nice neighborhood.
It doesn't beat you up, and it's extremely effective.
Be not weary in well doing.

denton: IIRC I ran 52 RL19 with the 140 for about 2850.....good load.Years prior to that I used 4064 with 140's in the 7x57....but that was back in the 70's sometime.
And you are right of course....it does not beat you up.
The 280 Remington is overbore.

Thank you for this information! With my 7x57 Mauser with military barrel, new, I reach the same velocity with 160 grs bullets! But with a little more 4350, R19 and R22. Without ANY signs of too much pressure and with a very good, 7+, case life. And 2650 f/s with 175 grs bullets. Also 7+ reloads with the same Winchester case.
By the way, this is only 50/70 f/s less than a 7x64 Mannlicher-Shoenauer full power (really safe MAXIMUMS)loads with the same bullets and R22 and IMR 7828.
I like, as a reloader, the 7x57 more than the 7x64 in standard lenght acctions and standard European chambered barrels for both.

Ironic thing, my first rifle purchase was supposed to be a 270 but I found a 7 Mag cheap and no 270s used.
My load? 160-162 @ 2860 .....mild....effective....very accurate.

I absolutely addressed these questions years ago developing a superior solution. I made mine a .284Win! I just can't figure out if it is a short long action or a long short action.

The .284 is a great round. In fact, it's just as good as the 7x57!
Sorry, couldn't help myself. I said the same thing about 15 years ago, when BS'ing with Steve Timm (Dogzapper on the Campfire), but the comparison was the .280 and .270. Steve almost choked on his tongue, laughing.

I bought a set of minty, but used 7/08 dies the other day for $15 bucks..... I don't own a 7/08.  I hear tell there's a nice Classic Select for sale near you... grin

What magazine length does the 7x57 prefer ?
IE - Would it fit Ok in a SA Winchester ?
