LBP,
I have just about everything Finn ever wrote. Can you tell me the title of that article? I'd like to read it.

j62 : I don't know about comic books, maybe you do.
The intermediate length actions that are suited to the 7x57 All seem to feed pretty well !
Can that really be said about the "spectrum" of SA actions ?

Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

Can that really be said about the "spectrum" of SA actions ? Are you nuts? Name ANY factory build 7mm-08 bolt gun that is known to have feeding problems due to the cartridge design.. Search those comic books you've been reading, I am SURE the answer is in there.

LBP,
I finally dug the June 2000 Handloader out of my files and read the article you mention, which is indeed titled "Shots With The .308."
I can't find the 7x57 mentioned anywhere. Finn does mention the 7mm-08 twice, relative to the .308:
1) "In those countries where 'military' cartridges are forbidden to civilians, the 7mm-08 is an acceptable substitute chambering."
2) "The round [the .308] sired the .243 Winchester, the .260 and 7mm-08 Remingtons and the .358 Winchester. While all of them are find rounds for some applications, none of them can match the versatility of their daddy as a big game cartridge."
I knew Finn, and would argue with him that the 7mm-08 is any less versatile than the .308 as a big game cartridge--especially since in the article Finn says he prefer 150-grain bullets in the .308 for all big game hunting, and nowhere mentions any bullet weight heaver than 180 grains--which the 7mm-08 can pretty much match with 175's.
At any rate, I can't find any reference to the .308 being vastly superior to the 7x57. I really can't imagine Finn making any such statement, as he was too firmly based in practical reality.

John, I sat on my hands when I read the LBP's comments about Finn and the 308/7x57... I have the article, but didn't have to check it to know Finn never mentioned the 7x57 in it. He was far too honest an observer and reporter to make such a ridiculous flat-statement.

Brad,
I had the same reaction, but wanted to read the article first to make sure.

I'd sure like to convert my 7mm-08 NH built M-70 SA CRF to 7X57. Only Swampy would blaspheme the 7x57 to that degree.....

John, Then the article is called something along the lines of "10 Greatest Big Game Cartridges" or "10 Greatest Cartridges" and ran in Gunworld if I recall, I no longer have the issue I guess as I can't find it. If I remember correctly what Finn said was something to the effect the 260, 6.5x55, 7-08 and 7x57 were great medium game cartridges but that the 308 was superior and more available.

The issue would have had to run sometime in late 97 after the 260's release...

The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

LBP,
Well, if you ever run across it, I'd sure like to see it. But I doubt Finn ever wrote for Gunworld, since he had an exclusive agreement to write for the NRA magazines until he went to work for the Wolfe magazines under a similar agreement.

I never remembered Finn making flat statements like "superior" when comparing supremely similar cartridges. Finn always wrote in a nuanced fashion and hedged quite a lot.
I do remember him writing of the 308 that for general BG hunting it was "likely" the best of the bunch (referring to its offspring)... that's about as dogmatic as Finn ever got in print.
