with the top and bottom covered, for a pure deer rifle the Roberts is the cat's ass.....plenty enough, but not too much.

Thanks in advance

That is a tough decision. They are both classics and for good reason. I still kick myself for selling a M700 in 257 Roberts when I was hardup for cash in college. I definitely came out on the short end of that deal too. That rifle was made back when no one questioned Remington's QC and had nice iron sights too.

You could just about flip a coin on this or maybe let the rifle decide it for you. The .257 has mild recoil and about ideal for deer, but one could argue similar with the 7x57. Since you already have larger cal rifles though, it's not like you need more in this rifle purchase.

257 is sounding better and better. I also reload so ammo availability is if no concern to me. Thanks for all the input guys.

Gringo Loco- I'm 21 right now, quit college and work for UPS. I have never sold a rifle cause I needed the $$$ but have sold some that I wasn't satisfied with. In the last 4 months I have sold 7 rifles. But I'm finished with that. I'm getting my collection down to about 7-8 rifles that I truly like and use. Several of the ones I sold had no use whatsoever.

I have never owned a ruger rifle before but am willing to give one a try, even though I'd prefer the bob in a m700.

I own both and live in the Deep South.
IMHO the .257 Roberts is the ideal rifle cartridge for my area with our smallish deer.
For larger deer and our smaller black bear I prefer my 7x57.
For large bear I prefer either my 9.3x62 or my .45-70.
I'm also very fond of my 8x57.

Ain't life grand when you get to ponder such a win-win choice?
I wanted a .257 Roberts since forever. I am on my second and love the cartridge.

That said, the 7X57 is a grand old round too. You could likely just buy whichever rifle you run across in either calibre and like the best. Either way, you'll be happy.

Dad and I 'split' a Ruger .257 Roberts about 7 years ago or so. In a matter of months we decided to 'split' another one so we wouldn't have to fight over it. Nothing at all wrong with the Ruger's, but I just like the trimness of my Kimber Classic. If my Mark II had the Hawkeye stock though, I might think otherwise.

Hard to argue w/ that. wink

A 7X57 could replace both my .30-06 and .260Rem.

Amen brother ingwe!

The 7x57 has put hundreds of pounds of venison in my freezer and is easily my favorite cartridge. Right now I'm down to three grin .

No flies on the .257 either, it's a neat cartridge and I've alway's wanted one but, if I had to choose the the 7X57 will get the knod everytime.

Terry

P.S. That is a stunning rifle Alan!

Count me FIRMLY in the 7x57 camp. There just is not a better deer rifle made, period. My loads with the 175gr Hornady spire point interlock just flat work, no excuses, no premium price, no bull. And the trajectory is as flat as I can utilize, with plenty enough "power" to do the job at what I consider "long range." And coming off of two of the largest commercially-available 30 caliber magnums (30-378 Wby and 300 RUM), the light recoil of the 7x57 is a real blessing! The 7x57 recoils very noticably lighter than any load in a 30-06, and even less than a 270.

I have owned and hunted deer with 3 different Bob's and was not satisfied with the results. Now, I truly believe the fault lie NOT with the rifles or caliber, but with bullet choice. Hence, the fault lie with me. I am a cheap bastid and I tried to make too soft of bullets work at too high of velocity, and this is not the first time I did that. A lot of guys here love the Bob, and I believe the reports, so it must be good. If and when I try the Bob again, it will be with premium bullets ONLY.

Nice 257 Alan...have a VZ33 257 w/synthetic that should get a wood stock--who made the stock?

7x57 vote--I like the 140g 7mm non-premium bullets for deer and they are insurance for really big whitetails in wet nasty cover.
