What is the loss of velocity in the 257 W. when shot in a short barrel. Wonder if the cost per case of the magnum cartridge and the belted case problems (case life etc) is worth it. Just nosing around.afish4570 crazy

25-06 -----3200 fps

I would get the 25.06

I am seriously wishing I had got a 270 wsm or something else like that instead of my 257 wby. only because my 25.06 performs so well.

With RL 17 and a 25.06 you darn near do anything a 257 will and lots cheaper too.

my 25.06 will darn near get 3500 fps with 100 gr ballistic tips and it shoots a ragged hole at 100 yards and teh 110 gr accubonds are probably doing 3300ish and are only 1" different in the point of impact at 100 yards than the ballistic tips.

This is from a 700 classic

Long time ago, I took a 26" tube (257 Wby) and cut it to 23". Can't recall the exact number lost but it was something in the low to mid 90 fps. I spect right @ 30 fps per inch was lost.

I long ago learned to worry less about barrel length and worry more about building for balance.

If you are getting 3500 with 100 btips you are about 250fps faster than nosler says in their reloading data.

My friend has a vanguard in 24" and I had the accumark with 26". I got 3650 fps with the 100 gr tsx and he got 3590 fps. Not enough to worry about. Barnes does their reloading data with 24" barrels. Have a look at the 257 and 25-06 respectively .

24 in Wby 257 is fine. You won't notice a difference in real world performance in 24 vs 26 in the 257. Muzzle blast is a little greater. As for comparing the 25-06 and 257 with the same barrel length, the 257 will be on avg 200-350 fps faster.
I have both and have done extensive chronographing on each.

I love my 25-06, but get the 257. It's a hell of a round.

I would get the 25-06. Brass is readily available, and I don't think there is a better med. sized rifle round. I only use 100 and 110 bullets.

257 Wby duplicates the 25-06 easily.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that 257WM brass can be made from 7MM Rem Mag brass, am I correct? If so, this would be a cheaper alternative if one reloads.

The .257 Weatherby will always get about 6% more velocity in equal length barrels.
