Anyone know the going rate for the S&W 15-22? My only local option is Gander, and they wanted $550.

I'd buy a dedicated upper compatible with standard AR15 lower, like the Spike's Tactical. Then as he gets older he can swap the top end for a 5.56 and all parts interchange. My 10 yr old has a blast with mine.

I thought I'd surprise him and swapped in the 5.56 upper. He did a mag dump and shot my target off the chain at 175 yards and never noticed the difference. Guess he surprised me!

Gunshow this weekend had them for about $450.

If you can get a local FFL to accept delivery, you can probably get one on line for $425-$450.

I took the plunge on a used S&W 15-22 a few days ago. It was the first run (without the flash hider) and I got it for 325

Very clean, indicating very little use and I hope to remedy that problem in a few......

Now, decisions, decisions.... the trigger definitely needs tweeking, and got to put a scope on it, but really liking this unit!!

YMMV

I've been using the Vortex Strike Fire, red/green dot sight on my "tacticool" 22's, great little sight for the money.

I'm tossing my hat in the ring for the SIG, I've had one for almost a year, put about 1000 rounds down it, no issues at all. Very accurate, and lots of fun.

Before that I had a GSG-5 with the fake silencer/barrel shroud, the original versions before the lawsuit, and had no issues with that rifle either. Sold it to my best friend, because he really wanted it, and I really wanted the SIG. Now he won't sell it back to me.

Another good friend has the S&W, and had had the extractor destruct on him twice, the 2nd time I was with him; not a fun experience. Both times the brass was blown up in the middle, front half stuck in the chamber back half fragmented, extractor blown/sheered clean off on the bolt. Last time he sent it back it took almost 3 months to get back to him, I think they may have replaced the whole bolt this time, I know he's not shot it since, and is very disappointed in it's performance for him. The fit and feel is great, and it's accurate when it works, just not happy with the mechanical issues he's had.

I just picked a used S&W Magpul for $400. It handles great but I'll have to see how it shoots after Christmas since it'll be a gift for my two sons 11 and 8yrs old. Maybe I will get to shoot it after they've run a few hundred rounds through it.
Merry Christmas to all!

I've got a S&W 15-22, too. It is just loads of fun. I had a Rock River Arms 2-stage trigger installed and it shoots so much better than it did originally. My gunsmith first tried to stone the sear to lighten the pull, but advised me that the metal was very soft in an AR stock trigger, so it might not lighten up without shooting bursts. He was right, after a couple of magazines I was shooting up to 8 round automatic bursts. Kind of fun, but unpredictable and not great for accuracy. The RRA trigger is the way to go if you want a nice, approximately 3-lb pull.
