I killed a big Canadian doe at 250 yards with the 139gr gmx. Impact speed was ~2600fps. The doe was facing me, bullet broke the humerus, tree ribs, destroyed everything inside (VERY messy gutting job) and was found in the top round muscle in the rear leg (embeded sideways as can be seen with the petals pushed up). Weight was 134.4gr. It lost one petal and I'm assuming this happened at the same time as pushing up the other petals.

Deer was DRT. It seems to me that they are "tougher" and don't open as wide as tsx/ttsx. I will use a softer bullet for 300+ yards.

Curious what the cartridge and muzzle velocity were?

Congrats on the doe.

Thanks for the report. They seem a bit sporadic. Another report showed a mushroom substantially larger than the corresponding TSX.

Looks like great performance there though!

That bullet looks pretty dang good considering the impact velocity and bone it smashed through. That it ended up sideways with a bit of the expansion sticking up doesn't warrant concern,IMO.
As to using a softer bullet for 300+ yards I like loads that can be counted on from up close and personal to far as I care to shoot. Guess some areas are conducive to knowing your likely range before hand.
What is the BC of that bullet?

I recovered a 165 gr., 30 caliber (superformance loads) GMX from a South African impala. The bullet weighed 163.7 grs. Fired from a 30-06 with a published muzzle velocity just under 3000 fps. The Impala was facing me, slightly quartered, I hit him in the brisket a bit on his right side and the bullet was just under the skin on his left side by his paunch. I killed eight head of plains game, the bullets stayed in the Kudu and Black Wildebeest but were not recovered. Everything else had two holes in it. Convinced me this was about the only big game bullet I need.

Hornady says .486 bc on that bullet. I like to have the tough bullets loaded for walking around just in case. I also hunt a hydro line off a 30 foot tall ridge where I can see about 500 yards. I have lots of time on that ridge to pop in a softer bullet for further out there as it takes longer to set up a longer shot like that anyways.

Here's a 120 TSX at/around 200 yards from a 7mm-08 last spring for comparison, this taken from a caribou.

GMXs seem softer, more malleable to me. I agree with the idea of better opening though. I have several of the old Barnes XFBs in my collection which open wide and flat.

What was your impact speed or MV? Any bones hit? Very interesting.

I never ran 'em across a chrono. It was a good-shooting load, nearly max by Barnes #4, so I went hunting. I don't recall what the bone damage was specifically. I worked six caribou that night starting at 9:30, so dark for a stretch. I know I didn't hit the big bones in the pelvis or spine.

Assuming a MV of 3000fps impact fps would have been about 2450fps at 200 yards. Interesting.

kman;
Thanks for taking the time to share your results with us. I find it interesting to see how some of the newer bullets work at various ranges and different velocities.

This season I too was able to find the first GMX that hit a deer. Should anyone be interested, here's a link to the post and photos.

Thanks again kman, Happy Thanksgiving to you and good luck on your upcoming hunts.

Regards,
Dwayne

I enjoyed reading your report. Thanks for sharing.

I know this sounds crazy but opening up a deer is like Christmas to me. Never know what you will find inside.

I am curious to see how the GMX stacks up against the TTSX once we start getting some widespread use of the GMX.
