I have a Cuisinart that's good, but don't know that it's any better than a comparable Mr. Coffee Maker. It's not fast, but neither is it particularly slow either. Just for grins, I timed the Cuisinart this morning. To brew the full 12 cup pot took 13 minutes. Mine is a stainless model. Probably the same as JM has. I also have a french press, but usually just use the Cuisinart. The french press makes great coffee with a robust flavor, but it takes more grinds to get full strength. I make it that way on occasion and when I camp.

I'm old fashioned. I use a percolator for my "filtered" coffee. Cowboy coffee is sometimes made when I'm in a really groggy mood. The Patrick McManus recipe for cowboy coffee was to boil an old cowboy in bacon grease.

Real coffee looks like this. No French fluff and no plastic machine that makes lukewarm sissy coffee.

I used a Melitta drip for my journey to California via Washington.
I still use it daily for my cup or two.

What do you have to burn in a French press to get the smoky flavor of cowboy coffee?

I've never tasted smoke in any of my cowboy coffee. But I guess you could throw ashes into your press.

i just timed my coffee pot. 13 minutes from start button to finished product. I'd shoot my house all to hell if I had to wait 13 minutes for a pot of coffee every morning. We use a Bunn.

I will try to remember to time my coffee. I doubt it is as fast as a Bunn but I doubt it takes a lot linger. I take the tea kettle that has spent the night on the wood stove and put the already hot water in the coffeepot. Add fresh coffee in a paper filter to the stainless peculator and set it back on the freshly stoked wood heating stove. Then I jump back in bed while the cabin heats and the coffee perks. Now you may be able to drink your French press or your drip coffee before I can drink my real coffee because my coffee is really hot.

I'm easy. Any brand drip filter with Maxwell House is fine with me. Well, you think Bud Select is good beer too.

We have a Kuerig sitting on our counter right now which, btw, is easily our tenth coffee maker in the last 20 years. However, as I type this, sitting right next to the Kuerig and happily making noise is a GLASS percolator I found at a consignment store. It, like me, is ancient but still works reliably. The only pain with it is not one local store carries the flat filters for the basket. I've even tried the sporting goods stores that sell camping percolators.

My coffee maker took a dump this morning halfway through the pot it was brewing. looking for a decent coffee maker that brews fairly quickly (old one took forever) programmable brewing time automatic shutoff 2-4 hours and doesn't cost an arm and a leg doesn't drip all over the damn place when pouring a cup
anyone have any votes on what to get? We have a Cuisinart stainless that fits all you're specs, except care must be taken when filling the maker with water. Tends to dribble. But does not dribble when pouring a cup. Here it is: Cuisinart DCC-1200 Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker at amazon, and a review at On Cocffee Makers. Edit to add: Our machine is ~ 10 years old and takes ~10 minutes to brew a full pot, mot exactly a blistering speed, but the longer brew time seems to get more coffee out of the grounds which is important to us at $8 a can. Our old machine (IIRC it was a Melitta?) would brew 12 cups and throwing half again more coffee on top of the old grounds would get us a decent second pot. Tried that once with the Cuisinart, didn't work at all. No matter what you get the conical filter is better than a basket filter.
