Help appreatiated.

I am putting together an Ecxel - Tabel on scope parameters.

Can someone provide the measurements for the Leupold M8 4x scope in accordance to the Leupold specs for measurement?

Specs Measurements - please go to "SPECS".

Not a fun task, I realize, but I would be glad to be able to use the acute numbers.

Thank you very much.

Not trying to be a wise ass here but its 1" tube dia, 12" long ,1.36" objective lense and a 1.55" occular lense and don't weigh much, is clear and bright. Pages 98 and 99 have the Leupold scope specs in the current catalog .I did NOT find the M8 4x listed on either page, best I can do maybe someone has an older catalog. Magnum Man

unrestricted eye lens diam = 36mm(1.4")
Objective O.D. diam = 36mm(1.4")
Eyepiece O.D. diam = 41mm(1.6")
Tube diam = 25mm(1")
Length = 290mm(11.4")
Weight = 241grams(8.5oz)

Thanks guys.

The 1985 data should suffice.

If someone could find the eye relief data, it would be complete.

MM,

I just wanted to ascertain that the M8 and FX II are similar in measurements.

Are you looking for dimensions on the older M8 4x28mm or the newer M8/FX II 4x33mm?

cmg,

There were two M8 4x's, the earlier (and longer) 4x28, and the later 4x33, which has the same dimensions as the present FX-II. The eye relief was normally a little different between the 28 and 33 as well. Which one are you interested in?

Thank you, Mule deer and 3d,

I am looking for the M8 4x28mm specs.

Apologies; especially to EZEARL. Thank you for your time and work.

The specs for the 4x36 you have posted, I noted as well now.

NO apologies needed at all.

I had a mid 60's Leupold catalog but passed it on to some Leupy fanatic here. Maybe they'll post the specs.

cmg,

The absolute measurements of the 4x28 varied a little slightly over the years. I have several of 'em, and when I get a chance I'll measure the scopes and the eye relief and get back to you.

I don't know the exact eye relief measurement of the 4x28, but mine is shorter than some of the newer Leupolds. I have a hard kicking, lightweight .375 and have to be careful to stay away from the scope with the 4x28. Never had that problem with a 2-7x33 and 2.5-8 that were previously on the rifle.

Mule Deer,

thank you for your very generous offer.

DesertMuleDeer,

that jives with my impressions.

Reason for this little research is a table to calculate scope utility for Ruger No. 1 Rifles but I am sure it will be usefull on uther issues as well later.

Thanks again.

cmg,

I just measured 5 of my 4x28 Leupolds. The overall length rannged from 11.5 to 11.9 inches (292-302mm) and eye relief was right around 4 inches (100mm) give or take a little.

I've found the 4x28's to be among the best-suited scopes for Ruger No. 1 rifles, thanks to their length and eye relief.

Mule Deer,

thank you for your time and effort.

Oregon,

thank you for supplying the weight and fixing the length.

I have a line on a 4x28 Leupold M8. It came with a post 64 Winchester .30-06 in 2000 from Canada.

It later did duty on a Marlin .45-70 until the reticle broke.
We had it fixed in Germany and then the owner took it to Tanzania, where it was put on his Mauser 98 .375 H&H loaner rifle.
His clients then took a load of game with the rifle - but now the reticle croaked again.

Scope will stay with me, now on a Ruger No.1 6mm Rem. and we will find some thing for his .375.

Thanks again for all the input.

1) Marlin Guide Gun 440 gr. Hard cast lead @ 1600 fps.

2) M98 .375 H&H 300 gr. @ 2500 fps

No idea, how many rounds each.

Thing is - both guns were used daily. These are not regular hunting guns taken for a spin each fall. More like 180 days in and out 4x4 vehicles and rough travel in between.

I do not think this to bad for a 30+ year old scope.

In any case - it will be fixed again and then given some leisure time on said 6mm, where I am sure it will give more great service.

There was an older version of the Leupie 4x, both M7 and M8, that had a 28mm front lens. They were also about an inch longer than the current version, hence the moniker "long tube 4x." They did come in at least a couple different lengths themselves. I find that the longer long tube 4x seems to have the best resolution of the old ones.

There is also a current 4x28 that is a rimfire scope. This also has a "compact" eyepiece size, so is smaller overall.

There was also a 4x28 Compact riflescope version back in the day that matched the size of the rimfire.
