I had the choice of both as well and chose STW.

The RUM gets you only so little more for all the volume.

The RUM needs a 28" barrel + plus while the STW shines with a 26" barrel.

I've got both and they are both capable of clover leaf groups on a regular basis. If I had to pick one over the other, especially in a 26" barrel I'd go with the STW. Not much more velocity gained with the RUM and there is a noticeable step up in felt recoil. Either cartridge makes critters dead just fine.

There's just not enough gain with either cartridge to warrant the extra expense. Try to even find a box of factory ammo if you need one in a hurry.I know, theres a certain mystique to having something a bit different. I suspect that the tried and true 7mm Remington will do anything you need to do at a much lower cost and availability of factory ammunition is an important factor for a hunting rifle. With the all copper Barnes, Nosler or Hornady bullets you can shoot all the way through any animal on the continent.

I have a feeling that if all rum owners loaded balls to the wall like some of the old layne simpson STW loads that you would see the 7 rum put 50-100 fps on the stw. Capacity always wins even if it is in a land of diminishing returns for the amount of powder burned... I've several hundred rounds thru my 7 rum.. still as accurate as new. So bbl life has not been a big concern for me.. shoot three and let cool. clean every 20 or 30 rds. Plenty of rum haters on this forum... I have 7, 300, 375. And lots of other standard and mag chamberings... Love em all.

I have had three 7 RUMs and one 7 STW. With 26" barrels the RUM only gets approx 50 fps more velocity over the STW with all things being equal. (same powder/bullet/primer) I like the RUM brass better. I know some will squawk that rem brass isn't that great on quality. All I know is the brass is easy to resize and is definately stout besides it is easy to acquire something that cannot be said for STW brass.

My opinion get the 7 RUM.

I just picked up 300 pcs of Winchester 7mm STW brass.

You could not give me Remington brass of which Rem brass is everywhere and not difficult at all to find.

More powder burn, recoil and blast for 50 fps?? That's it?!

Neither. 270 WSM - the 140gr accubond (BC .50) coming out of the 270 WSM at a touch over 3200fps is a ballistic match for the 160gr (BC .53) coming out of 7mm RUM at approximately the same velocity (if both are in 26" barrels). Recoil from the 270 WSM about 19 foot pounds in a 8lb rifle, recoil from the 7mm RUM in an 8lb rifle is about 32 foot pounds (if you can find an 8lb 7mm RUM with a 26" barrel). Both will have dropped about 32" at 500 yards. The 270 wsm has about as much energy at 500 yards as a 180gr out of a .308 at 200 yards - ie: enough to do the job.

Do you reload?

If not, my answer would be to get neither and go with a standard 7RemMag.

If yes, you can load the RUM to whatever level suits your fancy, including duping the STW for velocity and recoil.

I'm goin to wait until after the first of the year and see what Remington has new for 2012. I think I'll just go with the 7mm RUM because my 300 RUM needs a little brother I wish that when I got my 338 win mag that I went with the 338 RUM. I guess you can say I got the Ultra Mag sickness. LOL

I'm a STW fan. More than likely, one problem with the 7STW SPS, is you will be confined to max mag box length. Which sucks if you reload.

No doubt that can be an issue, but the same issues exists with the RUM...

Great post there. Otherwise I would consider the 7wsm.

I would take a 7mm rum over the stw anyday of the week.
And a 7mm-338rum would be about perfect.
