I received a call from a friend who tells me he has one of these for me to look at. He says it is in great condition. He also told me that it is drilled and tapped for scope mounting. I can't find much on an old Savage bolt action Model 40 but can find a lot about one in 22 Hornet but, I believe it is modern manufacture. Was there a Model 40 and should it be drilled and tapped from the factory? Dave

Yes and no. IIRC, it is called a super sporter? Detachable magazine.

No, it shouldn't be drilled and tapped for a scope, but many of them were aftermarket fitted for scopes. They're cool old rifles, and nice ones are fairly scarce.

If it's in decent shape, you will be astonished by the workmanship that this "economy" rifle shows. Compare it with a Remington 710 and you will see what I mean.

Only fly in the ointment is availability of factory magazines. They are, if anything, scarcer than the rifles.

That Model 40 is a good one. Kind of homely in appearance, but ergonomically they're great. I had my dad's for a long time, and in a weak moment let my BIL have it. It is a very accurate rifle with its receiver sight, and is one I wish I had back. Mesa's warning re: magazines is to be heeded. They are made of unobtanium, and should be snatched up whenever you find one.

Here's my 45 Super Sporter in 30-30. I agree with what's been said here; they look a little funny, but they fit like a glove and and they are very nicely made.

Magazines do come up once in a while on GunBroker, but they are pricey.

I think that's more for the ones in 30-06 more than the other chamberings.

Seemingly so in ones chambered for .30/06. I don't think the design lends itself to high pressure loading, but what does?

I know where theres a model 40 mag in 300 Savage for $50 up here if anyone is really in a bind finding one.

Thanks for all of the help. I am dealing through a friend but the photos look excellent. He says the barrel is mirror and lots of rifling. Drilled and tapped which is a bummer and in my thoughts has a very negative effect on the value. It looks very much like the one in the photos in this thread. Asking price is $350.00. Thoughts on that price? Is the receiver sight a standard issue? Dave

Is the peep sight a Lyman and is it stamped "Lyman 40" on it?

Probably a factory issued sight if it is.

$350 seems high for a model 40 but I don't own one so I shouldn't even talk prices on them, usually see them go cheaper though.

I would negotiate the price down if possible and then jump on it. Worst case, it is a good hunter at that price.

If it was really clean and wasn't drilled and tapped $350 would be ok. As mentioned above, the quality of these older "economy" guns is really impressive.

$350 is high for a gun that's been altered, but it's not outrageous. It depends on how badly you'd like to buy it. $250-$300 would be closer to reasonable in my opinion.

you say it looks like the one shown in this thread... is it checkered? That would make it a model 45 not a 40 and would explain the peep sight. 45 is certainly momre valuable in my mind than a 40 but as other have said, the market is weak on these and the holes are going to kill the value...
