Hello - Newbie here although I have been reading the forums for a while.
Is anyone familiar with guide Robert Hardy? Considering a bear hunt with him next year. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I assume you plan on hunting in south central Alaska in units 13 or 14? Or is he planning on becoming licensed in other areas?

He mentioned several area's but not by number. If I recall he mentioned about a 3 hour drive from Anchorage to Sheep Mountain and then catch a bush plane. A couple of the area's he mentioned were Black River and Oshetene? I scribbled one or two other names but cannot read my own writing!

Thank you for the info Phil! Looking forward to it if it all comes together.
This would be a grizz hunt. We did discuss guns. He likes heavy for caliber bullets at 2700-2900 fps, likes the Nosler PT. I mentioned my 338 WM, have both 210 and 250 NP's, he heavily favored the 250's. Care to share any thoughts?

Sheep Mountain is only 2 hours from Anchorage and is a beautiful drive. I've been near the Oshetna on my 4 wheeler, some good country back there with lots of caribou and decent grizzly numbers. Do you know who yor flying in with, Mike Meekins perhaps? If so, you'll be in very good hands. Is this a spring or fall hunt?
That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

Robert did not mention the pilot's name. It will be a spring hunt, aprox May 15 start date, 10 day hunt. Great info - Thank you!

I'd go with the heavy bullets. I have a 338/06 and use 225 Ttsxs in it, but would use the 250s in the 338 or my 340. The 338 was developed by Elmer Keith, (333 OKH Belted) and his view was, NO bullet under 250 should be used in it, he'd have considered 200s as ground hog bullets. He normally used 275s and even 300s. Todays bullets a lot better in a lot of ways, but I'd still go with at least the 225gr Ttsx in a 338, and probably the 250. When you talk heavy for caliber in a 338, you're talking 300 grs at least (there are 350s for it). You might also want to look at the North Fork bullets, as have a friend who's used them on Cape Buff, and says they work great. I'd definitely go premium though, Barnes Ttsx, Nosler e-tip, North Fork. As one person put it on another thread, when you're paying many $1000s to go on the hunt, a few $ each for ammo, cheap insurance. Federal makes 338 ammo with the Ttsx bullets, but maybe not the heavier ones.

Thanks for the reply. Yea I have read some of Elmer's writings, your right about him probably thinking of a 200 338 as about right for woodchucks! For sure bullets have improved since his experiences. I favor the Nosler PT as they have always performed for me plus the guide was pretty strong on them. So the 250's just may get the nod for this hunt. My load chrono's just a tad over 2700 fps and the NP should perform quite well at that velocity.
I have played around some with some 275 gr Speer bullets but never anything heavier. At 2600 fps and with that 348 sectional density they should ruin any grizz's day!

I've seen a couple of 275 Speers that came out of brown bears and they performed wonderfully.
I tend to use more than enough gun

I hunted Browns on the Peninsula in October and my guide had a Nula in .338 Win Mag stoked with 250 grain Partitions. He told me he uses the 250's whether he's guiding for Brown Bear, moose or sheep. It's his "go to" in .338 and I think it would serve you well. Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks! The 250 NP is looking like my choice for this hunt. Glad to hear the good report!
