I agree....the reason I got so annoyed with Leupold for not making the std Duplex available with matte finish in the 4X and 6X scope line.....I can't figure out why they did that....except as a way to force us to the Custom Shop as a revenue enhancer.

Me too! I'm not normally terribly cynical, but the only reason I can come up with is the one suggested by BobinNH: to drive many of us to the custom shop where we can get the finish and reticle we want for extra fees.

metricman,

I like just about any sort of a multi-point reticle for most varmint hunting. One of my favorites is a very conservative reticle from Leupold, with three dots below the crosshairs and one above. I have this in a 3.5-10x40 on my 700 Classic .221 Fireball, and it works great. I just can't remember the name right now--and they may not make it anymore!

Rick,

The thin part of the Heavy Duplex subtends just about an inch at 100 yards in the 6x42 FX-3, which of course means 4" at 400 yards, leaving at least 3/4 of a big deer's chest all around the reticle. I have found it plenty accurate enough to hit the vitals--and with the right target at 100 yards, good enough for the 1/2" groups some many people seem to require for deer these days. But obviously people vary.

I also have the Heavy Duplex in the new 3x20 FX-2 on my .416 Rigby. It came in quite handy when aiming at a Cape buffalo and very dark shadows last September, and I was personally glad to have it rather than the Wide Duplex.

Because most rifle/ammo/shooter combinations (except campfire ones whistle) don't shoot under 1 MOA, I don't see the value of thin reticle section less than this for hunting rifles. Even the standard duplex I find to be too thin in any kind of challenging light.

John,
It is not the heavy center section that bugs me but the big wide outer sections. I am just a "big sky" guy at heart. Wide open places. I would like a 1-1.5 wire with a big dot 4" in the center. At 100, sight so the bullet hits at the top of the dot. At 175 it still hits about the top of the dot. At 300 it will hit at about the bottom of the dot. At 400, a 4" dot subtends 16". Use that as a range finder. And at 400 drop is about 16" this assumes about 3100-130 277

My last email must not have been positive b/c they never replied, likely they must have had their feelings hurt since I bought some Bushnell Elites instead, and told them so, and why.......

It really irks me that a mfg. is DEAF to it's customers...

John,

Haven't bought a VX3 in a while. My last 4.5-14x40 with WD had the ranging bracket on the bottom post and the adjustment ring noted accordingly. Did Leupie stop this practice?

Isn't the Wide Duplex an exact copy of the LR-Duplex minus the dots? I really like the LR-Duplex, even when not using the dots. If so, thumbs up for the Wide Duplex, good reticle design.

I run the German #4 in a 1.5-5 Leupold on my 9.3x62, perfect match for me, very easy to bracket running animals [been practicing on calves] I think it will be fine come hunting season, I wont shoot that rifle much past 250 yds, may bring it on the 24 HR pig hunt.

The Minox #4 appears to be wider between the heavy posts than most.

Rick,

Well, yeah, whatever works!

I'm not at all distracted by the posts in the Heavy Duplex, in fact I like 'em. Our buddy Steve Timm ("Dogzapper") feels the same way, so obviously we all like different stuff.

Which is why, once again, it bugs me that Leupold (usually the company that offers something for everyone) severely limits the reticle in certain models.
