Vacation... LOL... what's that?
When they call, I work... last job was 18 months of 11-12 hr. days. Got 2 days at home in 2010, only worked a little over 7 mths. Got 7 days home in 11 mths in 2011, but didnt work as many weekends.
I'm on vacation now, got laid-off 12/2/2011, setting by phone, waiting on next assignment!

I work three days a week, 14 hrs a day. Next 4 off. So for 4 weeks I'll work mon, tues, wed. Then I switch to thurs , fri, sat for four weeks. Well after four weeks of mon,tues,wed as I switch I get a week off. A month later when I switch back I work 6 14's in a row(sun off in between)This gives me 6 full scheduled weeks off a year plus 2 weeks vacation , 5 sick days, major holidays etc . Plus I only work the three (long)days. The work sucks but the time off is great

You don't have a choice here, our labor laws state everyone gets four weeks per year, after six months employment you also get one week of sick leave. You can accumulate your paid annual leave up to three years (I think), after that you either have to take the time off or get it paid out.
We also have ten statutory days which everyone is supposed to take off, xmas day, boxing day, new years day, 2nd Jan, Waitangi day, Queens Birthday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labor day and the regional Anniversary day. Some of those are set dates so if they fall on a weekend you don't get an extra day off others are the nearest week day. If you work those days you get another day off in lieu and most jobs also pay time and a half for working those days. If I work those days I get standard pay and a day off later.
Despite taking time off while Shenah was in hospital a couple of times last year and taking a few days off here and there I ended the year with 2 weeks owing, some of that I took over xmas and new year and I've just had another two days off. The rest I'll let accumulate for a while and probably take a few days off around late April or May to hunt then maybe some more later in the year.

26 days of regular leave and 13 days of sick leave. I can carryover the sick leave, but only a little over 200 of the other per year. I currently have over 2,200 hours of sick leave. On the job 33 years.

I get 1 week of paid time off. The way the economy is, I get several more days off without pay. Lately I have been using vacation time to make up for those days.

It's interesting that the original question was posed as how much vacation time "should" an employee receive.
Paid vacation and other forms of paid time off are simply part of a compensation package. Compensation specialists refer to it by the simple descriptive term "payment for time not worked". Doesn't matter what you label it - holiday pay, vacation, sick leave, whatever. It still adds to the cost of labor.
It is no different from asking what a person should be paid. Whether a mechanic or a CEO, it comes down to the market for a person's work. I don't know what the alternative might be, but it would seem to ultimately be some sort of government authority, which already exists in the form of laws such as minimum wage. You either agree with the free market principle applied to labor, or you accept some form of government control.

While I am a full time employee I work six months a year, a shifter I am. I have been here ten years and get 240 hours a year now, I can carry up to three years of vacation on the books. As of today I have 684 hours of vacation I can use. Thinking about a trip north this summer. We get no time off for holidays but when working a holiday the compensation is triple time for the 12 hours. Thanksgiving and Christmas are two consecutive holiday "days".

I get two weeks. No sick days, no holidays.
Use or loose it.........without pay. I take off whenever I want however, just don't get paid for it outside those two weeks.

After 1 yr we get 120 hrs vac & 120 sick and 11 paid holidays. I've been there 8 yrs and have 750 hrs sick accumulated. The first year I had so much time off (that I wasn't used to) I made more doing side work.

I get a total of 10 vacation days per year for the 1st 5. I get about 13-14 sick days per year (never lose these) I get 1 personal day per year (never lose it)
I also get July 4th, Labor Day, Thursday & Friday of Thanksgiving, a day or 2 before Christmas until a day or 2 after New Years, MLK, Good Friday & Easter Monday, & Memorial Day off.
I work at a Catholic College.
I'd rather have a bad day hunting than a good day working!

37 years on the job.............I get a total of 7 weeks vacation time. We can't accumulate. You use it or lose it. + 4 sick or personal and 2 floating holidays + 9 federal holidays.

Never had a paid vacation in my life at age 41. Being self employed kind of does that for you. Had lots of unpaid ones - or otherwise called being out of work lol.
I start a new job in two weeks where they offer 2 weeks a year and 3 after 5 years.
Otto is my co-pilot.

I get about 22 days PTO. Also get a separate extended leave bank (accrues a few hours per pay period) that kicks in after 3 days of illness. No holidays although you are essentially forced to take 4 or 5 of them off and use your PTO for it. I wouldn't mind a few more days, but my employer treats me very well and I have a lot of flexibility/autonomy, so I'm not complaining.

Don't recall what I got when I started. Right now, all of them. I traded nearly 30 years of my life and ducked a buncha bullets to get here.

I get 11 paid holidays, 21 vacation days, and 10 sick days a year. so, just for fun, how much should or could your wages be raised in exchange for less time off? it's all a solution to an algebraic equation after all. but, who can think like that? Wouldn't trade paid time off for more pay, it's worth more to me to have my sanity than money in my pocket.
