A good whack behind the ears with a stout limb always worked for me on coon/possum/fox/coyote. The club ain't such a good idea on skunks though.

I've used .22 short HP's from a 6" SA revolver for 30-some years.

Shoot critters broadside thru the ear on a line to exit the other ear. Instant dispatch, usually no exit and if it does exit.......there's already a hole there.

Only exception is skunks. I slip a .22 LR into the revolver and pop them broadside behind the shoulder. Not fool-proof......but reduces sprayers significantly.
