I just loaded up some Barnes TSX 150s with LeverEvolution powder. Just over 2400 FPS! Max load is 28.5 grains. I got well under inch groups at 25.5 grains so the workup stopped right there. I wouldn't be afraid to go 200 with that combination. I think maxed out if the accuracy held up decently at all it would still run out of speed around 250 though. 30-30 bullets don't tend to have impressive BCs.

Shot a big turtle in the tank with a Hot Cor 170 Gr.

I'd estimate about 50 yards! whistle

story bout out neighbor up at the farm, he's an old fella in his 80s now, but back when he was younger he was a crack shot with his old 94 win 30-30 They had some wild dogs that were harrassing cows out in a 40 acre pasture, story goes, and this was verified by 4-5 differnt farmers that were all hunting the dogs at the same time, that old jerome layed that old 94' across a corner post and killed the lead mutt clear on the other fence line of that 40 acre pasture with his open sighted 3030. that 40 is still there with the same fence, and i ranged it where he told me the dog was at 442 yards +- just as a closing, The last deer he killed was last year, a doe, at 203 yards with that 30 30 sitting right next to me, that damn;d 30 30 barely touched his shoulder and that ol 94 barked and that doe tipped over stone ass'd dead. Suffice it to say, i sure as heck wouldnt wanna be in front of him and that ol 30 30 even if he was in his 90s!

I killed a doe a few years ago at 210 yards with a 30-30 using 150 grain Federal factory load. The rifle is an H&R 1871.

I believe one of the Win 94 loonies that hangs out on this site has made some long shots at paper with a scoped 30-30. Not sure about game.

I used to hunt with a couple of California Blacktail hunters who used old Red Box Federal 125gr bullets in thier scoped Marlin 30/30's and killed those little (under 100lbs, soaking wet) blacktails at over 300 yards from time to time.

I want to get my hands on a good solid beater/hunter grade 30/30 someday and AI it, then load up some 130gr TTSX's.

That load ought to flat out work. Are you using the regular pointy TSX or the ones with the flat noses? Latest info and tests says the old tale of no pointy bullets in tube magazines is hooey.

A buddy of mine killed a very nice buck back in the early 90s with a 30.30. I can remember thinking that is was about as far as I could hit a 3 wood. It was a hell of a shot. The deer was walking slowly and after being hit it only went about 10 yards. It is one of the nicest deer that I have seen taken here in N.C. This buddy of mine is an incredible hunter. Some of his accomplishments are amazing.

its knowing your equipment and some of these old guys just knew their equipment well, because often it was the one gun they owned...

he my grandad thought a 300 Savage was a magnum of some sort.. and a 30/40 Krag with a 30 inch barrel was a cannon...

heck my granddad shot a deer at a half mile with one... yet every time we heard that story, the distance got a few yards further each time...

of course my granddad captured the entire German Army in 1918 also...

and I think that materialized from my grandmother knew Alvin York and her family knew his real well.. and at times she would just casually say when she was mad at him for something stupid... I think I maybe should have married Alvin instead... which would immediately piss him off to no end..

and make we kids laugh our fannies off when he wasn't looking on account of how much it pissed him off...and she would secretly smile at us when he wasn't looking...

I killed one in '09 at 236 yards. Hornady FP at 2180 fps. Rifle is a Winchester M94 with a Williams FP rear, Marbles bead front sight. Bullet still fully penetrated and the deer went about 20 yards before going down.

Buddy & I use to shoot at an old strip mine and got pretty good at cantaloupe sized rocks in the opposite highwall about 300-350 yds. The only killing shot & only shot I took at a deer with a 30/30 was a whopping 30yds.

I sure don't qualify. I've never taken a shot more than 100yds. I'm good at getting close. No so much at long shots.

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.
