Thanks for the input guys. Most shots will be 100 yards or closer with a rare chance at an open field shot of 200 to 250 yards. Those are chip shots for a mild loaded 308. I think a hyper velocity 7mag Barnes load will handle it.

IMO that's pure unadulterated BS. If a Barnes hits a deer like creature at 320 yards (the OP's max range estimate)chances are pretty slim that it won't exit. That being the case, how in hell does the OP come to the conclusion that NONE of the bullets expanded beyond 25%??? I would be willing to bet that this is one of those cases of looking at the hole in the hide and leaping to conclusions. I cannot imagine how many hundred deer a person would have to shoot to recover enough Barnes bullets to have an informed opinion of their expansion from recovered bullets alone. I have examined quite a few deer shot with Barnes and about all I can figure is that they wreck stuff on the way through in a manner consistent with expansion and appear to cavitate through the chest very well. Out of about sixty deer I have yet to see any evidence of failure to expand.

As to the OP, 110 in 7mag is skimpy on sectional density. At longer distances on thicker animals I might be concerned about deep penetration and thump power. My son-in-law killed his buck this year with a 110 Hornady cup and core from his .308. The range was about 50 yards. Impact was probably 3,000 feet per second and didn't prevent an exit. Two holes are always better than one. The sectional density is definiately higher with the 7mm 110.

I shot a 170 lbs whitetail in November at 375 yards .243 80 gr TTSX just behind the shoulder (+3200 fps). Nickel sized entrance wound/half dollar sized exit wound. Broke ribs-mangled some lungs. Ran 50 yards.

Sectional density is a lesser argument with homogenous bullets. The 110gn TTSX turns a Remy into a super .257 Weatherby with more caliber.

Randy, It was indeed. That was a couple years ago now but remember it like it was yesterday. Cold as heck but dead calm. He came to the horns and not far from where Jordan had taken a brute of a buck the year before.
