You mean to shoot?

Seems pricey for a shooting iron. And it's 3 years old now, so probably can't call them "new". grin

If somebody WAS looking for one for hunting purposes, I know of someplace with a display model that they are asking $699 for. Wood isn't as nice as most, which is why it's probably still there.

With all the gold inlay it will make a great deer gun, the sun should reflect off of pretty much every direction.

I'll use you both as a reference for "snarky". I expected a response on accuracy or field use experience. If it makes you happy the Mauser carbine I normally hunt with is old and ugly and boring. So perhaps you'll be accustomed with that personal experience.

I'm thinking there aren't alot of collectors buy them so they can take it to the range and fire multiple boxes of rounds down them. They're anniversary rifles made for showing not shooting. I can think of alot more Savage models in 300 Sav that would be alot cheaper to buy if you just wanted to send lead down the range.

Oh, and ya, I'm always "snarky", it's my thing.

They probably shoot about like any other Savage 110 series rifle, well.

That said, shooting a commemorative rifle pretty much destroys its collectability and that seems like a pretty expensive rifle to take afield. But it's your $$, spend it as you wish.

If you want a Savage bolt gun in 300 Savage to shoot, I have a nice Savage 110 in 300 Savage collecting dust that I would be happy to sell for $500 plus the shipping/insurance to your dealer.

Anyone who buys a 50th anniversery rifle now for a "collectable" is going to be disappointed. We will all be dead before they become collectable.

Was looking at the one still sitting on my dealers shelf about an hour ago while I was ordering my American Classic in 250 Sav. I think it'll be there for awhile, the price still hasn't moved off $1600.

Depending how old you are.

Some of the Winchester 94 commemoratives made in the 1960s are pretty "collectable" today.

I think that commemoratives are interesting as individual items if they commemorate something that you were involved in or if they are a series that commemorate some that you're interested in. I know a guy who has a couple dozen Nebraska commemorative Winchester 94s that he had hoped to fund some retirement fun with, but he has never been offered the price that he wants, so he has kept them.

Limited runs, like the mannlicher stocked Rugers that Lipsey's sell, tend to increase in value pretty quickly because so few of them are made. But unless you're really "into" Savage Arms, I can't see the draw of any of their overpriced commemorative/anniversary rifles.

Jeff

PS - That said, I did benefit from the over-run of the 24" octagon 308 barrels in the form of the 99Cs that were made with those barrels, as they were a nice vehicle for squeezing a little more speed out of the 30-284 wildcat.

I own a Savage 99 in 300 Savage. I like the cartridge but wanted model 10 accuracy. And the anniversary gun is also a beauty. Pride of ownership trumps collector value. In my gun safe an underused rifle gets sold.

So it originally retailed for about $1600, rapidly dropped to $1200'ish. Can now be found on gun auction sites for $1050 -> $1300.

At what price point does an Anniversary Edition become interesting because of the fancy wood? A standard model 14 in 308 will run $650 to $725 as a comparison.

I don't understand this "pride of ownership" thing that you speak of, nor do I understand the "don't shoot, don't keep" philosophy, since I have hundreds of firearms that I've never fired.

I have always thought that "pride of ownership" was a scam that car salesmen use to push buyers with low self-esteem issues into buying a Cadillac or Lincoln that they might not really be able to afford, when the same size Chevy/Buick or Ford/Mercury would have filled the need at a lower cost and corresponding lower commission.

Should be able to find a Savage 14CL, or a Remington 722
for alot less than what you will pay for the 50th Anniversary
model.

Sometimes an rifle is just a tool.

Sometimes it's a tool and a work of art.

As 260RemGuy says... "different strokes, different folks".

No deer is going to care what rifle it's shot by. But I'll take my choice.
