Only side thought I might have would be in terms on optics. Thinking I may just go with Weaver bases and a Burris Zee for rings so one can change out a scope on the fast in one needed to. And then on big trips, I'd always have a spare scope set up and ready to roll.

Just a thunk

And if for some odd reason I had to go with a factory set up I'd go with a 700 XCR and have the tube cut to 23". That would come in at a decent weight by my way of thinking.

Too darn many lachubwa 375's out there (fatties)

I agree. Here's our Rem XCR II in 375 Weatherby, Sako extractor, heavier duty firing pin and spring, bolt handle welded on. I would've bought a new M70 Stainless 375 but they didn't make one at the time and the XCR II did just fine. It's my youngest son's gun now, since this picture was taken I've had my gunsmith replace the ugly rings with Talley QRs and had them CeraKoted for him. The XCR II weighs 7 1/2 lbs with scope, unloaded without sling.

better bear picture, not a monster but he squared 8 1/2 feet and I shot him at 13 yards

The LH Model 70 stainless classic in 416 Rem I bought for my oldest son (I've got my 500 Jeffery), since this picture's been taken, the barrel's been cut to 22" and recrowned, the metal CeraKoted except for the bolt (it was too pretty to coat). I have to take some new pictures.

Thanks for the input Mesabi.

I have a Dakota 76 in 416 Rigby that I really like. I figured the new outfitter would be nice as well. Some great rifles here. I'm following this thread with interest.

Sheep,

I own two Dakota Outfitters. One in 300 WM and the other in 375 H & H. Their both excellent shooters and to me a better value than the Model 76's right now.

Yes,I think you're right. I would love a Dakota 76 in 300 H & H
to match my 416...but when I add up the costs it gives me a case of the shakes lol!! The outfitter in 375 H & H would be a really nice unit. I think I may take a motorcycle trip to see them and get my hands on one.

FOstealogy when you decide to retire that rifle let me know I will be sure it gets put to use in Alaska. That is almost exactly what I have been thinking of putting together.

Nothing is perfect, but this .375 H&H Krieghoff Teck O/U double rifle did the job for me in Africa. I ordered the rifle in 1970, at a time when Krieghoff was experimenting with free floating barrels on all their products, drillings, combination guns, and as you see, double rifles. I would have preferred traditional barrels, but that was not to be. (My .458 barrels were traditionally joined, however.)

Anyway, I used this rifle on three hunts, a total of eleven weeks in the bush, and used the .375 H&H for lion, leopard, greater kudu, lesser kudu and eland. The only shot I remember missing with it was at a moving eland. I must have checked my swing, because I thought I was swinging with it, but observers told me that my shots hit behind the animal.

The rifle has 25" barrels, 41.5" overall, carries a Lyman All American Perma Center 3X scope in claw mounts, and is stocked to measurements taken off the try gun at the Holland and Holland shooting school. I love it.

Wayne, is the manager of "American Hunting Rifles" in Montana and his products and service impress me, greatly. I am having a CZ-550-9,3x62 built using his safety, trigger and older-type stock made for him by MCMillan. The work is being done here in BC, by a couple of the guys who sub-contract for Ralf Martini and it should be ready mid-summer.

Wayne is very helpful, super nice guy and knows his sheit, so, here is his site and phone number.

Look at the CZ-550M in .416 Rigby, helluva gun for the price, IMHO.

Wayne Jacobson

I've had AHR build me three custom rifles over the years. Their prices have gone up considerably since I had my rifles built, but still a whole lot of rifle for the $$.

AHR has built a considerable number of rifles over the years for the Accurate Reloading crowd specifically for African DG.

1. FN Mauser action with .532 bolt face.

2. Duane Wiebe Oberndorff style trigger guard/mag box for .375 Ruger.

3. Barrel......not there yet, not sure what to get.
