I also have more than a few loaded with 150gr Power Points and a box of 20 loaded with 180gr Woodleighs, just in case I need a big bullet.

150's are 40grs of H4895, I'll have to dig up the 180's

I run 44.5grs of H4895 in the bolt and a few grains less in the 99's. I run H4895 also, medium speed load but I'm shooting limited range and it's accurate.

I suspect TAC would be just as good but I've been running H4895 for a long time.

I've shot a handful of deer with the 130TSX at 3000fps. Never recovered a bullet yet.

Anyone tried Varget with the 130 TTSX?
The starting load for a 308 is 47.5 Varget with this bullet with 2.80 OAL.
Is that safe in the 300 Savage in a Rem 722?

I think you'll be getting into a capacity problem. Lyman shows the top load of 44.5 gr. as being compressed under a shorter 130 gr. flat base Hornady.

Thanks.
I loaded 10 of Steelhead's 44.5 H4895 under a 130 TTSX and will try them tomorrow.
Was just looking for some other combo with that bullet while I'm out.

I haven't a .300 Savage, and i have never shot one, but the combination of the .300 in a handy little rifle with the 130 TTSX sounds like my idea of deer hunting perfection. The Barnes allow light-for-calibre bullets to achieve better velocity and penetration than you would achieve with a cup and core from small capacity cartridges. I disagree with most folks here who advocate using the Barnes to turn small calibre rifles into big game rifles - in fact, i think they have got it the wrong way round. My experience of the Barnes is that they are best utilised in relatively larger calibre but smaller capacity cartridges - like the .300 Savage.

I've had good results with both Rel 15 and Varget in the .300. The last test was Varget and Sierra 150's, in a 1920 Savage bolt action, and it shot better than the previous owner told me it would shoot.
So far it seems any classic .308 powder will do well in the .300, after you adjust of course for case size and action strength. Alliant shows data for R15, and Nosler I know has Varget data.

For deer I wouldn't be upset using any cup and core bullet usually associated with the .300's velocity. I get into using partitions and the like because I don't kill many things anymore, really do more shooting than anything else, but it's cheap insurance! My one doe killed with my .300 was with factory 150gr Winchester ammo prior to getting into loading for it. Worked perfectly fine in the woods on a double lung shot. Mike

I've used 44 gr, R-15 with 165 gr. Rem PSP bullets. This is also in a Rem 722. This is a 1" or less load in my rifle but is a max so work up.

Cool. Thanks David for starting this thread. Grabbed Dad's 300 Savage a couple of days ago and intend to use it for deer this year. I remember reading that Scott ran the TSX 130's and now I have the info I needed.
Thanks!
