...ever just look WRONG to you when you spell it? I mean common words, you use all your life? I just wrote the word "knife", and for the life of me, I thought it had to be wrong.

The older you get, the more often it happens--don't ask me how I know!

My cousin and I were playing "killer" scrabble, mess up and you'd lose the game. I used to come up some silly word I made up and he's say yeah right, what's that, and I'd make something up. It's the little cotter pin like thing used in a ship's rigging, whatever. He's be afraid to call me because it would cost him 50 points and the game if it were a word.

I used the word "were" one night and he said "[bleep] you, you aren't pulling that chit on me again, that isn't a word". I asked him "John, were you doing drugs or something?", he said not spelled like that.

So he called me and there was something like 13 variations on were. He was seriously bent out of shape and I asked him, "John, what were you thinking?" He threw the board and stomped off.

The major difference between belief and fact is those who believe something have come to a conclusion no facts will contradict. Well informed people are open to new facts that oppose their beliefs. That also defines an open and closed mind.

Yeah, it happens. It doesn't happen often but when it does it kinda freaks me out a little.

Yes, I have. At least "knife" is a semi-complex word. I have often gazed at a 3-letter word I typed and felt I had to have mis-spelled it . . . that word is "THE".

I was taught a form of sight reading that was a complete failure. How a word looks is how I am supposed to read it. As a result spelling has been a handicap all my life. Change a font and it gets even worse. No mater how I spell it it looks wrong to me. My understanding is all my early grade school classmates suffer the same problem.

Makes communicating with Dr Howell, a man I hold in high regard, more than a bit of a challenge. eek

Fortunately most here including Dr Howell have mercy on my dumb butt. grin

I always had a problem with "their" cause it just didn't look right. Finally figured out how to remember how to spell it by telling myself "the" followed by "ir."
This from someone who had to spell words like psychotropic all the time. Go figure.
