I have the Marlin 45-70(pistol grip stock) and would like to put a recoil pad on it. Thinking about the Limbsaver. Which pad and pad number would be the best fit for this rifle? I understand that the pad will have to be filed down to fit as it will be a little large.

Nephew had a decelarater put on. Very nice. I'm also partial to limbsave though hear grinding them takes a bit more work. Had no trouble grinding all the decelarators on our current rifles.

I put a Decelerator on my 444. I had to cut the stock down a little to maintain the length of pull, mark and grind the pad to fit and fill in the screw holes and re-drill. A little messing around, but it turned out real nice.
This is the one I got. Midway page

I've got the decelerator on mine exact same as yours and I'm probably going to put one on my other 45-70. That said if you go over to www.marlinowners.com you will find that a significant number of them do like the Limbsaver. I've had the decelerator on mine since at least the mid 90's and that was the best out at the time. I suspect both the limbsaver and the Kick-eeze may both be better but that's what was available then. I've bought at least 3 limbsavers and have never found one to fit on the Precut sizes. So I certainly wouldn't buy one of those. YMMV

I've got a Limbsaver on my 444S and I really like it. And it was made to fit, no grinding. MUCH better than the old and cheap factory recoil pad.

I want to add a note about having to grind the pad to fit.
I could have screwed the pad on as received and it would have fit very well, but since I had to cut some of the stock off to maintain my LOP, the stock was smaller.
Also, this was my first try at grinding a pad, and it was way easier than I expected.

taurus Ihave a grind to fit limbsaver on my 1895 .I believe it was the medium.Their website has the max. and min. dimensions for the grind to fit pads. One gunsmith used a different grit than normally used(?)and it came out OK and another said he puts them in the freezer first.

So what are you guys using to grind these pads with? I've got one to go on my 444 and it's just a bit too big.

I'm all thumbs when it comes to that stuff, best leaving it to the professionals, but I did hear that the freezer trick works.Maybe post on the gunsmithing forum and see what pops up.

I put a pre-fit (loose term) Pachmayar on mine. They are the best in my opinion. Require some working, but they make a world of difference. I have them on all my rifles.

I have tried both and prefer the limbsaver. prefit is true if you don't want to grind away, but is untrue if you expect it to be truly "fit"

I have a limbsaver on my 1895, and one on my kid's 94

I recently posted a similar question regarding a 12 ga shooting heavy slug loads. Most liked the decelerator. I haven't replaced the shotgun pad yet. However, I recently used both a Limbsaver and a Decelerator on a 30-06 shooting 220 gr bullets at about 2400 fps. I like both pads, but I think the Limbsaver is a little better at moderating recoil-- not much but a little. The Decelerator looks much better and may be a little less "sticky" (regarding gun mount). I'd go for the Limbsaver if I wanted the most recoil absorption, and had a choice. But, some gunsmiths don't seem to like installing them. My gunsmith prefers the decelerator. I've seen (Midway catalog) a thicker decelerator model, I think called the Magnum Trap. That might be worth looking into.

I put a limbsaver on mine. wouldn;t think twice about doing it again.

takes the sting out of 350grs going 2150fps <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I've got a Pach Decelerator on one of mine and a stock Marlin that's waiting for some attention one of these days, after some other projects.

Have pretty well decided to do it with a Limbsaver so I can get an accurate assesment on the two, from identical rifles with identical loads. Just for grins though.

Cause bottom line I can't see one being overwhelmingly better than the other, and if they are and it matters, .45/70 w/hot loads is probably the wrong caliber to be shooting.

Sides it ain't the shoulder that gets me, it's the middle finger as the lever slams into it repeatedly. I just about "have" to wear gloves for an extended shooting session with mine. YMMV
