Question for winchester 70 guys: Did any standard pre 64 winchester 70 375 H & H's come with cross bolts in the stock from the factory? I've seen the pre 64 supergrade have them, but what about the standard grades pre 64's?

TPAK: The only pre-64 Winchester Model 70's I have handled/seen with crossbolts in the stocks are those in 458 Winchester Magnum - and they were all kind of Super-Grades to begin with.
The 375 H&H Magnum Supergrade pre-64 Model 70's I have seen/handled did NOT have crossbolts.
My two Standard Rifle pre-64 Model 70's in 375 H&H Magnum do NOT have the crossbolts and again I do not recall seeing crossbolts on factory stock pre-64 Model 70's in caliber 375 H&H Magnum.
I am guessing that some one could have ordered a 375 H&H with crossbolts?
So lets clarify what you are saying - are you saying you have seen Supergrade 375's with crossbolts or are you saying you have seen 458 "Supergrades" with crossbolts?
I am cornfused a tad by your original posting in this regard.

The only pre 64 70's that came with factory installed crossbolts were the 458's. These were all Super Grades. I have seen many 375's w/crossbolts and for good reason, however they were not cataloged on the 375. I guess a person could have special ordered one from Winchester w/crossbolts, however, I would need to see some provenance, like factory receipt before I was convinced.

Thanks for the reply varmitGuy
To clarify the only supergrade 375's I've seen are from searching internet. I see some 375 supergrades with crossbolts (may just been pins with black plugs), and like you are saying the 458's look like they all came with cross bolts. So is it safe to say a 375 didn't come factory with cross bolts whether standard or supergrade?

I'm trying to get info on the standard grade 375, their's one for sale and it looks like it has cross bolts (may just be pins with black plugs), can't tell from pictures. Haven't been able to reach seller yet, so just trying gather all the info I can.

TPAK: Your inquiry has led me to a premise or possibility I can not answer - I wonder if the 375 H&H Rifle you have looked at may have a 458 stock added to it at some time?
I remember back many years when a few of these African/Supergrade stocks (with crossbolts) became available.
What I can't answer right off the top of my head is - will a standard 375 H&H pre-64 Model 70 fit in an Africans stock?
Again the two standard 375 H&H Magnum Model 70's I currently own do not have the crossbolts.
Best of luck to you in your dealings - but "I" would not hesitate to point out or to inquire as to the righteousness of the crossbolts on the 375 you are contemplating.
Again best of luck.

Looks like 375 sold. The more I looked at the picture it looked like it had black plugs in the stock, not the metal cross bolts. I'm guessing this would have been aftermarket??

Thanks Again

The African stock is an easy one to ID. It does not have a swivel base recess in forearm. The Africans had their front swivel attached to bottom of barrel. Also, the H&H would physically fit in the African stock since all the pre 64 receivers were same length, however the magazine box cut out would have to be enlarged to accept the longer H&H cartridge box. The 458 was the same length as the 264,300 Win Mag, and 338 Win Mag. These were all "short" magnums.

I know of one standard Pre-64 Model 70 375 H&H manufactured in 1953 that did not have crossbolts.

None of the 5 or 6 M70 375's I've owned had cross bolts in them. And they all had a crack in the stock between the magazine cut and the trigger cut so maybe they should have had cross bolts!

I have owned three P-64s in .375 and one custom version. ONE of my originals HAD two crossbolts when I bought it andit was an original Winny stock which would not fit the .458WM.

What I found out and I cannot recall how or where as this waa 15 years ago,was that some factory REPLACEMENT stocks came with these and that is how some got into the market. They SHOULD ALL have had them and so should all of the .338WM rifles as they all crack as the five I have had did.

Fine rifles, among the best ever made, but, the stocks were no screaming hell.
