I have a .308 carbine too that is a real tack driver - All you would have to do is bob the barrel to 20" and recrown - it is the same rifle with just a longer barrel.

Dont cut a steyr barrel!!!
In a seyr rifle bb the taper of the contour is not turned to size it is hammered to size. what this results in is a progressivly tighter bore as you go towards the muzzle.
As well the carbide mandrel imparts a progressive twist on the rifling. So while the average may be 1;12" twist, the last inches have a faster twist than the first. If you cut them off you are going to alter the accuracy of the rifle.
This aint a remington.
Cut it and you will regret it.

So the Steyr is a gain twist squeeze bore?

Weird.

Surprised this rifle hasn't sold.

My friend has one of these in .270 that drives nails. It is amazingly accurate and a nice handling rifle to boot. Bump

yes. i get 2560MV with GM308M out of my 20" SBS tactical and 2650 froma a 26" PSS. thats 100 FPS loss from a 6" difference.
as well the steel molecules, in theory, are tighter as the barrel tapers. I am guesing this also would reduce vibrations as they move forward towards the muzzle.
Hammer forging alters the grain structure and allows more even transmission of heat across the surface of the barrel.
Steyr BBLs are very fast for length and very accurate. the hammer forging pattern on the barrels exterior also has more surface area since its not turned down acting in a small manner like a fluted barrel alowing heat to disapate at a faster rate.

Wow!! I've got four of these babies and I knew they were special but I didn't realize how special. All of mine are supremely accurate and the action with the three position tang safety can't be beat. I'm glad this one is in .308. If it were in some of the other calibers, I'm not sure I could resist.
