want to take it to 1300yds. What's some real life ballistics on these calibers. It'll be my first 7mm. Always been a 6.5mm guy. Pros and cons of both. Fireforming isn't really a con to me. Aleast not enough to play in the descision. Twist rate recommended on both too also..

Long or short action? Hunting style or dedicated heavy rig?

1 in 9 twist with a 162 A-Max will get you around 1500 yds with a muzzle velocity of 3000 fps.

Summitsitter, Nosler makes 280 ai brass so you don't have to fireform. Will you be having a rifle built by a Smith or do you intend on buying off the shelf, Kimber, Nosler custom, etc. Do you have an existing action etc.

I plan on building it myself. Gonna use a LA 700 either way. Will have to open BF and maybe feed rails for wsm but will be able to seat the long bullets way out.

You'll be able to get some great velocity out of the 7WSM if you throat a chamber long with that LA mag. The new 195gr Berger EOL bullet is coming out soon, and that would be an absolute missile from the 7WSM at 2900+fps, with a predicted G1 BC of 0.794 wink

Can't go wrong either way, but if you're pushing it to 1300+ yards, I'd probably neck down Norma .300WSM brass to 7WSM and go.

Jordo-you reckon would need to run a 30 or a 40" tube to safely get 2900 with a 195 out of a WSM case... shocked

Personally i would build the 280 Ack over the 7mm WSM, with that said save yourself some trouble and get a 7mm Remington Magnum it will out do both.

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Dober,

It's purely speculation, but I see guys getting 3050fps out of the 180gr Berger, so I figure 2900fps should be doable with a 195gr bullet of similar design and bearing surface. Once the bullet hits the market, I guess we'll see what's actually achievable, and with different barrel lengths. Or somebody could just run it through QL wink

For a purely LR rifle, designed to shoot out to 1500+ yards, a 30" barrel wouldn't be the end of the world. But you're not gonna want to do much still hunting with it! grin

I just had a novel idea- you could always just run a 7mm Mashburn Super Mag and drive those 195gr Berger bullets at 3000fps for a true LR hammer.

I know I'm thinking outside the box here, compared to the rest of the guys on this thread, but give it a thunk and thank me later... grin
