Orion be careful with that load last week I had a learning
experience with that load and Federal cases. Didnt know they
held less volumne. Blew a primer with 58gr RL22 and 150gr Deep
Curl bullets.

H4831 and 150 grainers in the 270 are like Mother and Apple Pie.....

Having used a Oehler M48 Ballistics Lab on several 270's, I'll say when you hit 2900fps with a 22 inch bbl and 150gr bullets you are most likely at or above max pressure. Most of my 22 inch 270's top out at 2850-2885fps.

IMR4831 is temp sensitive with most loads, I rarely can get H or IMR 4350 to shoot well for me (bad powder karma I guess).

57-58 grains of H4831 will generally be max for 150's.

There are always exceptions: My latest rifle is a M700 SS Mountain Rifle built from parts. Regardless of powder, 2850fps is about max. 2900fps gives me a sticky bolt every time with 150's.

On the other hand, I have a 25 inch Douglas bbl 270 that shoots 150 NBT's over 3000fps, and that rifle and load stayed under max pressure on the Oehler M48.

My wife and I have owned around 12-15 .270's over the past 30 years. All shot well with H4841--and I've used all three versions, the original mil-surp, its replacement made in Scotland, and the present Australian-made H4831SC. Some of them would shoot slightly better with other powders, including IMR4350, H4350, RL-19, RL-22, IMR7828SSC, and Ramshot Hunter and Magnum, but I still tend to try H4831SC first. The one rifle that wouldn't shoot all that well with H4831 did best with RL-19 and Ramshot Magnum, so there are exceptions to every rule.

In a 22" barrel I tend to look at 2950 as maximum with 140's and 2900 with 150's, but there have been exceptions. Magnum and 7828SSC sometimes get a little more out of 150's, because they're a little slower than any of the other powders listed yet have small enough granules to fit in the case under a 150. In 24" barrels another 50 fps can be expected, and the one 26" barreled .270 I've owned got over 3000 with 150's.

Hard to beat the 150 Partition for game bigger than deer in my experience. The TSX's are also good, but the 150 tends to kill 'em quicker, and penetrates plenty.

I like shooting 150 gr Speer, 55 gr IMR 4831. My Vanguard in 270 is very accurate. Randy

I have a Husqvarna model 9000 and it loves 140gr Hornady SST,BTSP's and Sierra 140gr Gamekings on top of 56.0gr of H4831SC. These loads consistently chrono 2900-2925 regardless of temp. And the groups are very tight. Best is 2.1 in at 300yds. That's nuts. I definately can't shoot that good while hunting. 140gr bullet is a great compromise in this cal as it shoots as flat as a 130gr but carries more energy. Goodluck.

150's IMR 7828ssc. Start at 55 gr load till you hit 2900 and stop!!

160 partitions 56 RL 22 goes 2800 in my rifle. Got this from Dober and it is a great load. Start at 54.5 and stop at 2800

130's H4831sc Start at 59 and increase til you hit 3100 then stop Or stop when you hit 61 gr.

140's Not for me. Use either 130 or 150.

All shot in 22.75" barrel

I like H4831 or RL22 with 150s. RL22 is typically about 50-75 fps faster with 150s for me, though H4831SC is labeled as temp insensitive. Given 22" barrel, 2850-2900 is about tops with 4831, and 29-2950 with RL22 with 150s in my opinion. Never tried it with 150s, but Magpro hums with 130s so expect would be top notch with 150s as well. For 140s, I still like H-4831 for 29-2950 fps and several other powders get to around 3000 fps like Hunter, RL22, RL19. If I had to pick one powder that I though would shoot best in just about any .270, it would be H-4831sc.

H4831sc and RL 22 shoot 140 Accubonds very well in my 24" Lilja, but my top RL load gives me 3050 while the top H4831 load is at 2950.

How much H4831SC you putting behind those 140s? I'll be loading some BTs of that weight later on and don't have a Nosler book.

Shootem-on the 140 and H4831 run 57 behind it and it'll perk like a dream!

Haven't had a perky dream since I was about 16, don't know if I'm still up for that blush. But I was thinking in the 57-58 range. #1 son will probably be taking it off to school as a backup to his .260. Thanks!

I run 58 grains of H4831 under a 140 Accubond or BT in a few rifles. Always seems to shoot well.

I was using 57.0 of H4831. Nosler lists 58.0 as max with a 140 BT
