I think you need to give the .270 Win a try.

I owned one once for about 15 minutes.

I have a 7 mm Express (AKA .280 Rem) and a 6.5-'06 too, and they are great cartridges.

The 120 grain premium bullets in the .264" to .284" diameters are all going to be fast, flat and furious when they get to the critter.

Chimeing in late on this one...just found it..............

Steelhead, how about you tuck a $20 spot in the chamber, and throw it in the bay, that way if someone ever finds it, at least they get 20 bucks.

What do you want this one to do for ya? Fast and flat? Heavy and hard? Middle of the road?

Yes.......
I have heavy and hard with the 416. I have LOTS of middle of the road. The only fast and flat is the 6.5/06.

I once again raise my voice in favor of the 6mmAI.

Nothing could be less boring and more interesting than the historic 30-06 Springfield the most storied cartridge ever.

The popularity and flexibility of the 06 is unquestioned. Just use your imagination.

The reason you got that nice looking rifle cheap is the damm metal butt plate. Thats what to change!!

Think Roy, either 257 or 270. Both will flat out haul ass.

Yep. on an auction. Twas a couple days ago. Can't
remember which one and it seems to be gone now.

Nice rifle. I was thinking of a 280 Remington at the time.

Enjoy! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Nothing in the super fast category, huh? How about a .22Cheetah (I am thinking about building another-way fun) or the 220 Weatherby Rocket aka 220 Swift Improved. Knowing the era of the gun though and that you don't have one yet the 257 AI sounds like a great option. Good post / thread!

Everyone either has, or has had, a .30-06. Of course it works...that's hardly the point. My Dad's '63 Comet worked, too...

SO...since you don't want another thumper...

Sounds like a 6.5x57 Mauser is in the offing...unless you actually don't have a .280. Then the choice is clear.

If it were mine, I'd make it a .25-06.

knock off the monte carlo.
re-forge the bolt handle with a little more classic sweep.
maybe a #2 dougie at 23.6 inches in 6.5x55.
dump the scope mount. fill holes.
add classic peep.
ramp front with gold-line centered in the back edge of a moderately heavy blade.
barrel band front sling swivel.
now re-blue the whole schmear.

enjoy the balance, the sweetness between your hands, the caress of the swede's gentle recoil, the efficiency of its killing power.

brings a tear to my eye ...

Go with the 257 Roy or a 25-284. Don't know if the VZ will do the Roy thang without a bunch of work, but the 25-284 definitely carries lotsa mojo and would be a cakewalk...

I just had a brainstorm (Don't Laugh it does happen from time to time <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />)

Rebarrel that thing to Dr. Ken's .220 Howell. Fast,Flat, Lethal, and a great match for a Mauser action.

dogcatcher,

The .220 Howell is essentially a .30-06 necked down to .22 caliber.

Ken Howell himself discusses the .220 Howell on this thread: .220 Howell

I'm not about to doubt Ken Howell on his doings, and I can't say that I know a lot about what I'm about to ask ... but from what I do know, wouldn't a .22cal in an '06 case be considerable "overbore" ?
