Ok, so here's what I'm looking for is what have you found for real world speeds out of a 7/08 with the 162's. Mainly only 20", 21" and 22" at most.

Also, I'm not looking for I pushed one to this or that b4. I'm looking for what load (please give the particulars) as well what kind of primer pocket life do you get with it.

Hello Mark:

While I played with the Hornady 162 gr, I just couldn't get an accurate enough load worked up to bother with my chrono.

I was using Varget, and loaded from 38.5 - 41.5 grs. The best my Kimber would do with these bullets, was 40.0 grs Varget. MOA was .946.

There were no pressure signs showing at 41.5 grs.

Dober did I get the wheels turning talking about 7/08 and AMAXes?!

If your rifle has a short standard action then hand loading a 160 grain bullet in a 7mm-08 cartridge case could make them too long to fit into your rifle's magazine.

I think 3K is doable with Moly and RL15...

And a 38" tube

I played with them a bit and could only get mid 26's out of a 22" barrel. Throat was short, mag was short, so my sample of one wasn't too impressive.

Given the right set up, I bet they'd shine. Maybe I'll try them again this fall. Different 7-08 coming late August, early September.

I've got an ackley, so it won't be apples/apples.

I shoot moly 162's and Re-15, 22" tube and get ~ 2750 (clock and drops agree)

I've one batch of brass ready for round 10, pockets are fine. Another batch is ready for round 5, and I haven't yet bumped the shoulder back, neck sizing only. I believe it to be a very sane pressure.

Don't forget to flick your wrists like the guys in the old westerns. I hear that makes the bullet go faster.

My hunting buddy uses a M7 with a 20" stainless barrel and gets right at 2600fps with 41gr of Varget. He did work up to 2700fps but brass life was short and accuracy was not was great, definite sweet spot at 2600. Adding the extra 100fps shaved off one moa of elevation at 800yards. I dont recall if the extra 100fps had any real effect on windage in field conditions.

2700 with H4350 Mark. I started with used brass and haven't really kept track but at "several" loadings primer pockets aren't showing me anything scary.

I ran the RL powders up and none of the perked in my 22" tube...

48 H4350 (usual disclaimers, work up etc)
Remington primer (why? good question!)
Win brass
WAY over mag length at 2.940"

2770 with Hornady book max of RL17 and 162 AMAX in 22" Sako A7.
Accuracy was uninspiring with that combination.

Ramshot Hunter also easily broke the 2700 barrier but I will have to reference notes for the exact speed. It showed more promise for accuracy across a wider band than the RL17

The same gun shot consecutive .4s with H4350 at around 2570-2600. Need to try the RL17 and Hunter at around 2700 one more time to see if I can coax it to behave at that speed.

I've shot 162s right at 2700 with RE17, in a 21" barrel. Brass life was fine (5 reloads on one case with no primer pocket issues, I do this with all promising loads to see if I'm ok....probably should do 8 or 10 but oh well). Not around my notes as to exact charge weight, but do recall it was within the newest Hornady manuals listed loads.

Thx all, I was kind of thinking 2650-to maybe 2700 with a quick tube or with leaning on it a bit harder.

Those using R17, how many grains are you burning?

i do not have the velocity .i had a rem 788 carbine in 708 it shot 42 grns RL17 it shot great ,I have a Rem sps 24 brl it shoots 43 grns of RL17 just fine.

Wonder if the 284 is the way to go for a short 162 set up

284 is a whale of a cartridge, but is best on a long action, especially with the vld bullets.

Exactly, it's a no go on a 2.8" action. A 3.05" Win or MRC short action, ok.
