My father is giving me a custom Mauser 98 that he has had about 15 years. Its a 30-06. I think I want to shoot 165's in it at 100 to 200lbs Alabama whitetails. Any suggestions on loads? I normally push the envelope on reloads in my newer guns, but fear that might not be a good idea with this older action. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

I think you can load the Mauser 98 as hot as the modern actions, without problem. They have a long history of operating at full 30-06 and 270 pressures.

You might be happy with 58 grains of H4350, and bullets seated .03" from the lands, so as to give a bit more space for powder in the case.

I'm betting that you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

I have a 30/06 on an 98 FN military action and I load the hell out of it with no problem. Also have a 98 in 416 Taylor. What 98 action is it?

I have heard about some getting heat treated again, can't remember what ones.

Most 98s seem to be strong, but I would start low and work up to the hotter loads watching for pressure signs.
Kinda a safety thang! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

You've got a winner....Try some IMR4064.......around 50 grains and work up to around 51 grains with the 150/165 gr bullet. This load works in 2 Sakos and a 700 ADL. Good luck and regards, Rick.

John Deere tractors and Sako rifles.....doesn't get any better.
