What is a good headlamp in the 30 to 50 dollar range? My old one with the flashlight bulb has to go. Thanks, mtmuley

I looked at a lot of them and settled on the black diamond. It is about 130 lumens I think. $50 at Sportsman's Whorehouse.

My primary pet peeve about headlamps - because lumens & brightness, switch access, battery type, reliability, beam focus, and all the rest, mean nothing without it...

remains for me...

too small a head band for those of us with American full-sized skulls.

I just recently got the new Fenix HL 30.
two AA's (I've been going to all AA batteries for my gear)
big buttons (2)
4 levels
up to 200 lumens
includes red led light
big headband

Obviously a little bigger than my zebralight (single AA) since it has two batteries. The HL30 might have a little wider beam distribution and it's instructions are definitely more straightforward, no levels and sublevels. Just push the buttons.

so far, so good (I still like the zebra too)

I went Fenix HL21 so all my electronics are AA, almost 100 lumens and it detaches from the head band if needed. The HL30 looks awsome but I have not tried one, yet. For a hand held I use a Fenix LD10(now LD12) or an LD20(LD22) both AA lights also. I pack the LD10 and use it daily. Great product.

I have a Petzl Tikka XP now, and I put the accessory lithium battery in it that can be charged off of the computer's USB port. Love it.

I've used a Petzl for several years now with complete satisfaction.
But my new Ptec I like even better. It has a red light option which really helps to maintain one's night vison if you like to sneak into your prime hunting area w/o using lights.
This doesn't sound like much until you realize that if you use lights before legal shooting time, the game can see you a very long way off.
Another good option is the small quater sized, key chain light. They are often all you need and they come in red as well. Make a good light to use while changing batteries in the dark. E

I bought a nice one made by Eveready at Lowes for $20. High/low spot LED, a flood LEDs for close in work, and an LED red for night vision too. Works great.

Another vote for the Zebralight. I like the H51 with the cool white for finding blood in the dark and the neutral for outdoor activitys.

i have a melon head too, and wear a 7 7/8 or 8 hat.
have not had any problems with P-Tec, Petzl, ray-o-vac, or energizer headlamps... in that regard

we have numerous of all the above here...

my personal favorite is the small rayovac, for comfort, durability, battery life, and useability...

LINK

we have more powerful lights. but this one is just right for most things i do, including walking night time trails...

i like having both white and red lights available, but dislike having to cycle through the same switch for both... they should be on separate switches...

I got this one this year, would buy it again if I lost it. Very good performance all around (battery life, brightness, modes,...)

And it falls in your price range.
