Yep, high/low beam switch. Now they are made of plastic and part of your turn signal lever.
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

RISJR; I hope that besides the current automotive query that this finds you and yours well.
If the vehicle in question was made prior to about 1980 give or take, that would be the dim/bright switch for the headlights.
Hopefully that was some use to you sir and all the best to you and yours this fall.
Regards, Dwayne

High beams/low beams switch Where God intended it to be. (From a time before some dumbass decided to put the gas fill on the wrong side of the car as well.)

God I'm getting old! I know it when there are people asking what that is.
That's where all the headlight dimmer switches used to be on vehicles built until about 1980.

That's the thing that, if you lived in the upper Midwest, controlled the high and low beams for the first four years of ownership then corroded into one position or the other because of all the salt and ice you brought into the vehicle in the winter.

But they were easy to change out Pugs, two screws and a small plug. You did not have to tear the whole steering column apart and buy a $200.00 part, they were about 10 bucks at NAPA.

When your wife gets her purse strap hung up on the directional stem while exiting the vehicle and frees it with a "gentle tug" that leaves the aforementioned directional stem (complete with dimmer component) hanging down like an elderly pecker in need of Viagra, it adds considerably to the repair bill.

The previous Gentlemen are correct in that it a high/low switch for lights....should you be driving a MAN bus and you find one on the floor just in front of your seat, it is another engine brake control.

=========== Laffin'...I didn't buy anything. It's a question a local friend of mine posted on FB. I thought it was just him asking but, apparently,it's a national question that received over a half million guess comments. You boys nailed it in nanoseconds. Some rather smart men hang out here. Old too!
