Greg's veiws on the 240 Weatherby in Peterson's Hunting, October 2012, has me wanting to build a 240 Weatherby. Does anyone else think this is a near perfect Whitetail/Pronghorn Cartridge?
If your here at the fire Greg,do you use it alot down south in the brush country while horn hunting?

It seems silly to me.
The .240 isn't really anything but a .24/06 with expensive brass, where a .25/06 isn't much different, but the costs involved are considerably less, without the foo-foo designer goofiness.

It just seems silly to me.

I have shot whitetails in the Coastal Prairies, the Hill Country, and South Texas with the .240 Weatherby using the 87 gr. SP factory load. I'm a fan of the round, and I'm a fan of the Mark V that I use. Hit em' in the boiler room and it kills em' just fine.

Greg excels at the long range shot. Past 300 yards the .240 Wby may do that li'l bit more than other 6 mm rounds, plus there's the whole Mark V thing...

Had one years back and kick myself for selling it, great deer round.

I have a .240 Wby in an HS Precision SPL with an Elite 6500 2.5-16x40. I even got a CH4D die to swage the belt on .25-06 cases as the first step in making .240 Wby cases out of W/W 25-06 brass. Fifty cent cases are better than buck and a half cases.

As I've mentioned before, the .25-06 is more practical and can do about anything a .240 Wby can do plus some. The .240 is an exciting ctg., howeever, and I do enjoy mine.

Edited to add, how about a 6mm-06 with an 8 or 8.5 twist, throated for the heavy for caliber bullets?

Or a 6mm-284 with the bullets seated really long?

I saw a lefthanded Mark V in 240WM yesterday, first lefty I
have seen in that caliber.

Another good choice, with the right twist, of course.

I built one for a prairie sniping rifle and my go to coyote rifle. I had always wanted one and have been a fan of my Weatherby's so far. I love the rifle I had built. It is posted here on the campfire somewhere.

Seems the 257 Weatherby might be a better answer to the question.

6mm Rem Ackley will get you to the same place with much cheaper brass.

I had one and sold it after a number of good hunts. It will kill deer just as well as the 25-06, 270 Win, 308 Win and the 30-06. It works but there's nothing magical about it. It's no better or worse than some other cartridges.

240 Weatherby does not appeal to me at all. Forced to choose, I pick a 257 over the 240.

I'll probably be buying a Vanguard in .240. Yeah, brass is expensive, but I find I like the more oddball chamberings. If I buy it, it'll be my third Weatherby cartridge, and first in a Weatherby rifle (the other two are Remington, .257 SPS and Classic .300).

And I believe Mr. Rodriguez goes by the handle "GregR" here.

Sorry for the slow response, but I just wrapped up a buffalo hunt and am still in Tanzania. I love the .240 Weatherby and use it on whitetails when the mood strikes. It's a great pronghorn and whitetail cartridge if the bucks aren't too big. That said, I think the .257 is a better choice if you're going after big-bodied bucks in the brush country where you really need to drop them in their tracks.

Very good point about the need to "drop them in their tracks" in South Texas. My first trip there I took one look at all the mesquite and prickly pears and decided I wanted to drop my deer in the middle of the sendero!

The small 6mm and .25 bullets make little sense for hunting big game.

They make smaller wounds than larger bullets.

Get a decent rifle unless your a child lost in the woods.

Start at about the .270 Winchester.

6mm's are for woodchucks and targets.
