I only made one thing dead with my long bow and that was pure luck... I will stick with my training wheels until I have a nice longbow I can call my own.
you will enjoy hunting with the Longbow , i love hunting with mine. Nice setup , how are you shooting with it and are you going to use it on the Hog Hunt this year?
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.
Missed a doe this am at 15yds ...I drew as she hit an opening and as I released she stoped and turned arrow flew right infront of her perfect elevation... I have not missed a deer with a bow in many years this traditional stuff is humbling
Damn nice Dan, I am beginning talks with Ed [too many letters] on longbows and such, I think I need to get into it too.
Gunner
Yes, you do!
I love my longbows!
Good looking gear, Dan! Too bad about the doe, been there, done that.

But there's nothing like drilling an animal with trad gear.
It aint easy, that's the whole point.
I won't even start hunting deer until about the 28th. That's when it gets good in MN. I did manage to drill a decent antelope buck in Wyoming a few weeks ago...so life is good.
Antelope meat is good. Better than deer, no contest.

I would love ta get set-up, practice religiously and be able to arrow a Turkey before deer archery season is over on 1-31-13, may be a pretty tall order/goal.
Thanks for the vote of confidence Bea, I need to talk to Ed much more when he/i has/have the time to get proper specs on a Longbow, I have a 31" draw, dont know squat how that plays out in poundage etc with a Longbow.
Gunner, I don't your physical type so I'll give you a quick thought.
Decide traditional bow or hybrid. Start ~40lbs.
You will probably find your draw shortening with a long bow or a recurve. Years ago when I shot long compounds with fingers, I drew at least 30.5" Now with a recurve or long bow I draw just over 29".
Most bows nowadays are very smooth up to 28", then they start to "stack" as drawn farther.
I cant my bows about 10 degrees and flex my legs slightly, thus when i get bow arm, head and draw arm in proper alignment, my draw is naturally shorter.
You really need to test draw a few bows to see what your requirements are going to be.
If you did still have a +30" draw with a long bow you would need a bow rated for longer draws and at around 37 to 40 lbs. @28".
Hope you have good luck finding the proper setup for you.
And I'd say you can go higher than 40lbs also Jerry....you are week and frail but not that much
I'll let Jerry shoot my two, one draws 48# @ 28", the other 60# @ 28". I'm thinking he will do just fine.

I'm gettin' old and wussified. I kind of lean to lighter bows now than say 20-25 years ago.
I started out many , many years ago with little mentoring. I was using muscle instead of proper form. Not enough muscle left for that technique now.
My current long bow is 42lb.@28", at 29.5" it draws 45lb. At 30" it goes to just shy of 47lb. And at 30" seems to really begin to get some stack going.
I'm all for shooting as much weight as you can handle properly. So, for a new guy, I would rather see an easier to handle weight to establish proper form and muscle conditioning. Then move up to the heavier weights.
That works for me, for some just going for the higher weights works as well.
Figuring it all out is all part of the fun for me.
I'm going this week to test a new bowyer's traditional long bow. Bamboo, yellow wood limbs, purple heart handle back. 64"/50lb.@28".
And I'd say you can go higher than 40lbs also Jerry....you are week and frail but not that much

LOL Dan, thank you for allowing me to litter up your thread, I dont care what hunters talk about in a thread I start, but some folks do, I'm just trying to learn proper CF etiquette.
Cant wait on that deal Ed, and I appreciate it greatly, do you suggest shooting fingers? and are the [tabs?] universal fit or do I need to get fitted for one prior to shooting?
Terry, does the stacking you speak of damage the limbs, I remember a very long time ago I pulled a friends longbow and the limb cracked, I didnt know the bows quality, or how he may have cared for it.
He was coaching me on proper draw technique/length, he kept saying pull, pull more, so I slowly did then CRACK- KA POP!!!!!........that sucked, and class for that day was dismissed.
I've seen some older 'curves and long bows that cracked over the years, due to being overdrawn. I don't think it is near the problem now.
Back when Fast Flight first came out I broke 2 bows in 6 months. The limb tips just would not take stiffer strings. Now almost all recurves and longbows are rated for the newer string materials.
Most bowyers now will tell you their bows are good to around 32".
With some bows the poundage is not the issue, it is that over 28" the finger pinch gets bad real fast.
Yeah if it fits your needs that is a nice bow and a great price. I have shot a lot of long bows and can say I have never shot a better bow then those from Dan Toelke. I plan on getting a take down model next from him.
Ghost that is a very good video. I agree for the money the Dwyers are a great bow. I would only say that to me they seem to stack a little more then a few others. BUT those others are fairly higher in price. I feel that the guy that made that video was very accurate and fair.

Those Takedowns are SWEET, and $$$$, but hell, it's only money.
I have to talk [and shoot] more with Ed and Lt. Pat to see exactly what I do need, am damn sure I like that Toelke demo bow though.
I was assuming if it's 53lbs @28", if my draw turns out to be close to 30" it may show to have 55-58lbs?
Lol just missed another doe same thing just under 25 yds is to far for me I have not missed this much in my life!
At least you have had a shot. I had a very nice 9pt but couldn't get him to close the gap and I am not willing to try a 30 yard shot with a long bow. I know guys that can confidently do it, just not me!
Well apparently 25 is to far for me I just have not mastered the elevation both arrow were right on target for boiler room but low... Had a 6 pt at 20 yds but I wouldn't shoot at him... I'm surprised cause its windy as hell
Lol just missed another doe same thing just under 25 yds is to far for me I have not missed this much in my life!
Keep at it George you will be fine. Keep your shots close at first and PICK A SPOT. Bagging the first is the hardest. Once you break the ice it's no big deal. Brush the misses off and stay at it. You will connect. I'll say it again PICK A SPOT.
I'm out right now called a flock of turkey in behind me played with them for a half hour even had young birds gobble... Season opens in 3 days I have a good feeling for this afternoon !

Don't give up George. I have decided i would rather miss and hunt with my Longbow than kill one this year with my Mathew. I'm still waiting for a shot this season.

Punch ya one Dan, Good Luck, just got through doing a little brushogging here, dang wind must be gusting to 40 MPH, glad I'm not trying to shoot/hunt a bow in it.
gunner500 Not sure what you plan to use for a quiver but I really like the Selway (without leather)slip on. They run $65 in my area.Holds 5 arrows.
That's the quiver I run. I HAVE a Jerry Hill back quiver, but I found the Selway is a much better quiver for still hunting.
Jerry,
I'll bring mine when I come up and you can play with it. You are NOT going to keep it. You can get your own...

Killed a tree this morning.... Had a doe at 15 yds but a tight window between 2 trees didn't quite make the passage had my arrow buried in the tree 5 more doe passed by 60 yds behind me after that Still sitting in my stand I feel like Robindud!
I'm gonna hang with it for a few more days to a week but when the rutting activity starts and the big boys start roaming the Mathews will be in my hand I still have time to accomplish what I set out to do,I'll gett'er done!
Good luck Dan, I managed to hobble up on the little barn for a little tin repair yesterday afternoon, think I'm gonna ice real good this afternoon and go try to get in my stand for some bow hunting too.
Good Luck Bro, Wild Turkey is excellent for Thanksgiving.
Gunner
Oh, and not just talking about the one in the bottle.
Back at ...Had the turkeys going flew down 100 yds fromme even got one to gobble they hung up at 70 yds... No deer moving yet Not sure what to make of toms with hens in the fall?
Stay at it , at least you are getting some shots. I moved one of my stands to some White Oaks the deer are feeding under , but won't get to hunt until Tuesday Morning. I hoping for at least one shot before Muzzle-loader opens Nov 3 .
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.
After talking with with Lt. Powell, I got the 66" Whip Longbow, it's 52lbs @28" and it's on the way, Thanks for the link MCH, that Dan out at Montana Bows is a sharp cookie.
How well do you like the Tred Barta's? Are the worth the money? I'm running some old carbons just because I can't waste good arrows but I plan on getting some more woodies soon.
I started of with the Samick Longbow because i wanted to make sure i would like hunting with the Longbow before i invest several hundred dollars in a custom or semi custom job. I believe i'm going to like bow hunting the old fashion way. I still have gotten a shot, had three does about 40 yards yesterday evening, but farther than I'm comfortable shooting at the moment with a stick bow.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.
I've had 6 shots 3 low 2 high and 1 deer stopped and turned and right infront...I've put the longbow down and am hunting with my Mathews as the rut is about to break here...when I smack a good buck I'll gab the longbow again
I just bought my Mathews Heli-m this past spring and I'm gonna hunt deer with it also...hopefully the stars line right and with in a week or so I'll be back to my longbow
Careful with a statement like that. Peoples will dissect and read into that til hell wont have it. But, I get it and understand what you're saying
Good on you Bea for the self control. I can hammer the piss out of the ol block target out to quite a ways. As far as 50+ yards some days. I wouldn't dare tempt fate past 25 yards though much like you. If you start doing that it takes out all the fun of bow hunting, especially that of a traditional stand point. It's supposed to be up close and personal not some long range impersonal sniping.

LOL Brinky, 30338 here on the fire sent me a very generous gift in the mail today, BRAND NEW FREE ARROWS , and they are the same kind I have ordered.
I shot my bow a bit today before dark, 5 yards-perfect, 10 yards-perfect, 15 yards-shot high.
So, just how do you men get low enough behind the arrow at full draw to aim at the target?
Oh, and I do have DVD's permission to litter up his thread with questions.
