looking at various rifles in this chambering. whay kind of velocity loss would one expect by going from a 22 inch barrel to a 20 inch to an 18" barrel. thanks all 1-10 twist

Go with the 22" as it will probably balance better and more speed is better than less speed.

The .250 Savage is not even close to being "overbore", and I doubt you'd loose even 100fps going from 22" to 18".

Hartmut Broemel who created QuickLOAD would disagree.

QL estimates 142fps (35.5 per inch) lost going from 22" to 18" with a load of 37.3gr RL-17 behind a 100gr NBT.

Sorry my friend but you dont and have not earned a 250sav. Stick with 2506.

I will take it back. The 250sav is a two hundred and fifty yard round that is it. Contender 10" to your rifle with even a 24" it is what it is. Perfict.

I have a Savage bolt-action with 22" factory barrel and a Ruger Ultra Light with 20" Douglas premium. I've chronographed loads from both rifles, though much fewer with the Savage as it's a new gun. Whoever mentioned 25-40 fps loss per inch is about right, though last week, I found the discrepancy to be greater than 40 with at least one load. I've been shooting .250 Savages for a long time; they need all the barrel you can put on one just to reach book figures.

I'd go 22". No point having more muzzle blast than necessary.

250 is among my favorite rounds and if I lived back East would be what I used for whitetail.

22" barrel. That's what I've got, wouldn't want it any shorter.

I go with 21.75" for these cartridges following the findings of the Warehouse Tests on rifle accuracy...

..........Not enough velocity loss to be concerned with. Go for the rifle OAL which best suites your hunting style.

You don`t have a 22" 250 Savage barrel to chrony, cut down and chrony and then repeat again which is the most accurate way to determine velocity loss.

Depending on the bore or bores you are comparing, the velocity variances can go anywhere from 15-20 fps per inch up to maybe 30-35 fps per inch.

A 140 fps loss tops I`d guess going from 22" down to 18" if that were even the case, won`t make any difference where killing effectiveness is concerned.

I'm curious, why would you chop the barrel? Is 2" gonna make it some sort of super-duper woods rifle or something?

Well for a while I had a little RSI and my buddy had one of the remington classics. He could best me easily across the chrony by about 150-200 fps. To be frank the little RSI was able to get 2600 with a 100gr bullet but not much more and with heavier bullets you were looking at 30-30 velocities. Never the less I doubt the deer would notice.
