Shot this guy yesterday. Poor shot (too far back) at 8:15, several miles later I finally caught up to him again at 1:15. One (more) shot as he ran right to left at 125 yards and he piled up. I was damned ashamed of my poor shot first thing. Longest tracking job I've had to do on a deer. Started out in a stubblefield, then to the coulees and then to the flats along the river. The haul out kicked my azz. Jason 22-250ai, 62 gr TTSX As he lay With the rifle

Thanks for the kind words folks.
Yeah, were it not for the snow I'd likely be out looking for him today. \
I had blood and tracks for about the first mile, then he and his little buddies came on some bedded mulies and the sign just went friggin everywhere. Spent 2 hours making a circle, then I followed out every deer track from the last point I had blood. No more blood, so it was an educated guess he'd be heading to the river to bed in the willows. I made my way to the river and cut sign of a big track traveling by himself. I'd have bet my truck it was a whitetail buck. I follow this sign for 3/4 of a mile or so and start seeing blood again. Hot damn, I was back on him! As I pushed the sign I saw more blood, and then it was obvious he was running. So even though I hadn't seen him yet I was close enough that he was getting antsy. Finally before I got to the last nasty patch of willows I know he was headed for he jumps up. I fumbled to get the mitten off my fingers so I could shoot. The rest is in the pic. I'm a big big fan of that Mcmillan Rem Hunter stock. Gun shouldered and pointed very naturally.

22-250ai, 62 gr TTSX As he lay With the rifle I see the problem right away, you used a Bubba Buddy, and the wrong color tape... Anyway BGG, good on you for sticking it and and recovering him. we owe them at least that much.

Good on you for staying with it, lot of people just chalk it up to a lost deer.

Thanks guys, I've gone this long without losing a buck, it was making me sick all day wondering WTH happened with this one. Ingwe, I slap an elastic buttcuff on all my rifles. Too damned handy not to. I've never understood the bubba stigma attached to them. I've been called worse. Ok, upon pulling his hide off it appears my second shot entered at his last ribs, and angled forward into his opposing shoulder. No exit, but I'll be darned if I can find the bullet. So for them like me that like to dissect the critter and evaluate bullet performance it's helpful. This same load went in and out lengthwise (not completely straight on, but at a very steep angle) on an antelope at 340 yards a couple weeks ago. On this guy at 125 it still showed some impressive penetration. I've found no reason not to really like it.

Nice whitey, BGG!
Gotta get the beard and aviators involved in the trophy pics though.
Sucks to have a mis-hit but it happens to EVERYONE once in a while.
Good on you for tracking his sneaky azz down, you would have REALLY felt like shyte if you didn't find him.
