TRH,

The primary concern with a 2" .38 Special is penetration. I wouldn't expect expansion from a 2" barrel.

If you don't expect expansion, go for a full meplat to maximize crushing damage.

Winchester and Remington both expand out of S&W J-frame 1 7/8" barrel in my experience
Well, there's expand and there's expand.

Buffalo Bore hard cast 150 grain full wadcutters give excellent penetration thru all sorts of material. I just shot one thru a 2" phone book and it didn't stop until the fourth gallon jug of water behind it. There was an impressive hole in the book. The bullet was almost unchanged in the fourth jug. I can't imagine this bullet deflecting off a glancing skull shot. These bullets will get the job done.

That's pretty impressive performance. Wadcutters have been shown to have pretty decent terminal effectiveness out of 38 snubbies.

ANY bullet will deflect off the hard, sloping bone of the skull or facial bones if the angle of incidence is shallow enough. Even high power rifle bullets will deflect under these conditions.

In the next few days I am going to do some shooting of 2x4 boards on various angles with wadcutters and Speer 135's. I am anxious to see the results. I'll get back.

That's my current carry load in my 642. My only "testing" with said load has been on deer. No problem with full penetration. I thought one might have stayed in but the gentleman that took said deer said he never found it.
